A Firey End

After our post about flaming drinks and the laws and hazards thereof we received a nice post from the council:
Greetings Wellingtonistas - just reading the piece about setting fire to drinks. Contrary to the comment of the mystery barperson in the mystery bar, there is no Council bylaw that prevents drinks being set on fire in bars. However dangerous and moronic behaviour (ie setting fire to patrons, staff, or the bar itself) will definitely bring the bar to the attention of the Council, Fire Service, Police, District Licensing Agency, ACC, OSH and the news media. cheers Richard MacLean - Wellington City Council
Anyone feel like a Zombie?

It is great to see such an old media stalwart, like the council, engaging the online community. I am very impressed Richard.

Speaking of hip bars and beautiful people, shall I see you at Lovelock's, Sam? We can share a flaming pint of Speight's.

Are you taking notes, Rex?

Now that it's legal to once again set fire to drinks, can someone recommend to me a good place to procure one of the aforementioned Zombies? Would it be out of place at Hawthorne? Perhaps Alice would be a more fitting establishment?

Hawthorn definitely do good ones, and while I don't think they have Zombies on the list at Alice, it could be worth asking. Matterhorn had some variations on the theme during their Tiki Bar Weekend, and while I can't recall whether they're on their standard cocktail list, I'm sure they'll be able to deliver. The same probably goes for Motel and perhaps Havana, though others could perhaps clarify.

Oh, and I wouldn't try one at Maya.

Cheers Tom. You are a gentleman and a scholar.

I'll be at Hawthorne tomorrow night, and will be sure to try one there.

Unfortunately, Hawthorn was closed for a private function when I went by on Saturday, so we made our way down to Alice. Holly didn't know at first how to make a Zombie, but was able to find a recipe very quickly. They didn't have any 151, so they couldn't set it alight. Still, it was pretty decent, though I can't compare as it was my first one. Very reasonably priced too. Alice is quickly becoming a favorite watering hole.

A Zombie with out 151? Is that even a Zombie?

I gave my drunken instructions to the bartender at Mighty Mighty the other week and was handed a very strong (and expensive) drink that tasted bloody good. I kept forgetting ingredients though (like the measure of water) and the bartender was like "really? four measures of rum?"

They used 101 instead. Still quite alcoholic, but not able to be set on fire. I'll be headed to Hawthorn to see how they make it there.
