Black is the new...

The MIGHTY All Blacks in a forest

Rugby fever has forced its way into our consciousness, ousting football fever for another four years. Expect the fever to become seriously inflamed and critical on Saturday when the MIGHTY ALL BLACKS take on the (cough) springboks.

It should be a good contest. The All Blacks made eight changes to the team the beat the Wallabies. The Boks have made five changes to the team that lost to the Wallabies. Take from that what you will.

But from a Wellingtonista point of view, I would suggest avoiding wearing green and yellow combinations this weekend. Black should be the colour du jour, like it normally isn't here in the Capital.

Also on Saturday, expect large numbers of men, wearing black, and standing on Lambton Quay outside of women's clothing stores. This phenomenon is particularly funny when it's cold, as the men have to huddle by the doorway (never talking to one another); too scared to set foot inside in case the urge to try on a blouse overcomes them.

If you don't want to watch the rugby (or even acknowledge its existence) I suggest popping into the Matterhorn for a Jerry Collins.

forget rugby

True Wellingtonians are spending the next two weeks inside surrounded by 500 or 800 (if your at the embassy) of their closest friends watching a myriad of excellent films courtesy of those brilliant people at the Film Festival.

After rolling over 30 of them today i can highly recommend the passion fruit and lemon curd ice creams at The Paramount. But do avoid the popcorn at the Embassy, last night it was stale and tasted like cardboard.

My pick for tonight is Li in Fearless http://www.nzff.telecom.co.nz/filmsynopsis.asp?FilmID=2348&Archive=0&RegionID=1&EventID=10&SelectedDate=22-Jul-2006&SessionID=6497 and tomorrow don't miss Shortbus at the Embassy http://www.nzff.telecom.co.nz/filmsynopsis.asp?FilmID=2348&Archive=0&RegionID=1&EventID=10&SelectedDate=22-Jul-2006&SessionID=6497

I actually watched the rugby. I was so proud of myself. It was the first game I really watched since they lost to France in the 1999 World Cup. I was all disillusioned and whatnot back then.

If we ignore the first 17 seconds.

aha! totally missed the horror start.

after kapo o pango, I went to refresh my drink, and by the time I got back, they were taking the second kick-off. If I'd had the sound off and the score wasn't showing (a la Soccer World Cup highlights packages on TV1), I wouldn't have even realised they'd scored.

besides, REF - THEY WERE A *MILE* OFFSIDE!!

that's what my dad was screaming at the tv too... which scared my dog... which made her bark... which made everyone (but me) yell at her.

Yeah, we watched it at the SF Bathhouse, where Jedi and that other bloke do alternate commentary.

After that first try they said "C'mon ref it's backyard rules, we weren't ready!"

Heh! I think that was probably a good thing for the game. If they hadn't scored so quickly, they'd never have sparked at all.

besides, that's part of the charm of rugby, the completely unexpected chargedown or intercept.

And yeah, Carter is the man.
