Whatever new art house cinema comes along, it's going to have to be good.
The original Rialto in Newmarket, Auckland, recently had a major refurbishment, totally rebuilding all the uncomfortable old theatres and replacing them with brand new ones with those fancy wide seats (obesity epidemic or luxury?).
It seems that movie-going these days is split between younger audiences - who'll talk and text and generally act the same as they would if they were viewing at home - and older audiences, who are even prepared to pay a bit more for nicer seats and being able to sit with like-minded audience members.
So if a new art house cinema can come along with comfortable seats, good sound and picture and not insist on serving me coffee in a china cup that I have to precariously carry into the theatre, I'll go there.
