Flat White, one sapling, please Barista

Submitted by mitch on Tuesday, 03 Jun 2008.

I just wrote about this for this week's issue of Bandwagon, but it'll be out a day late because of the Queen's day off yesterday - so I thought I'd let you Wellingtonistas know about it too.

Thursday June 5th is World Environment Day, and one of the cutest of a bunch of interesting events going on is happening down at the MP's end of town. The folks at Green Land, purveyors of fine coffee and counter foods with an eco-ethos, are giving away free Northern Rata (Metrosideros robusta) saplings with each coffee sold on Thursday until stocks run out.

Hunt them down in Kate Sheppard Place in Environment House -- walk/bus/run/skate there for extra carbon kudos!

Robusta? Arabica or nothing!

How, HOW did I miss the obvious coffee pun there!!? Thanks Stephen.

(And hey, web monkeys, you cut off half my post when you floated my image - I forgive you though because now I know how to do that trick too!)

Kowhai - when one of my kowhai trees sprouts a young one, it'll have your name on it.

I think it's on Thursday, 5th, though:

What if you haven't got anywhere to plant a sapling? Is there somewhere you can donate it to?

Thanks for the day/date correction - my brain was clearly feeling deadline stress and lack of sleep yesterday - obviously, I even missed the robusta pun!
Robyn I think that donating is a great idea but seeing as there are limited numbers of free rata it might be worth leaving yours for the next punter to claim. Though I'm told they're very hardy so maybe keep it on a balcony in a big pot for a while if you're able to, then give it to someone's backyard?

I went by this morning for a latte and a rata. The woman working there was very friendly, and the coffee was excellent.

I told her of my plan to plant the rata out on Somes next weekend and was informed that she already had plans to donate any extra trees to them.

Thanks for the headsup, Mitch.

Mm, I was really pleased when the coffee lady (yeah, she is so friendly!) said if I couldn't take the rata, it would be donated to Matiu/Somes.

Happy Arbour Day!

Mine is sitting happily on my desk at the moment. The poor thing is possibly doomed by my blackthumb though.

It was my first visit to Green Land what a nice little cafe (even though they put unadvertised cucumber in their sandwiches). Does anyone know if they have wi-fi?

I apologise for the inadvertant "unadvertised" cucumber. Heavens to Betsy! Rectified henceforth. And no, I'm afraid Green Land is currently without wi-fi.

rectified as in removed? coz that'd be best :)

And if y'all had wi-fi (even cafenet) I would totally set up shop there.

Don't listen to Hadyn, he likes pickles even though everyone knows that they're really just cucumbers dipped in evil.
