Note: The following is not an advertisement or "astroturfing" but just an article on a service offered in Wellington
With all the talk of connecting Wellington with city-wide wifi I thought I'd remind readers of the interim stop-gap: Cafenet.
I have been using Cafenet for a few years and found it to be reliable and fast (where you can get it). The biggest downside is that it isn't free. Still it is good to have a few Mb in the account (and I would suggest the Mb packages rather than time) for those times when reliable internet is required downtown.
Heck, they're even in Palmerston North (a fact that was a lifesaver during a work trip there).
But the gist is that it is still very very far away from a complete coverage of Wellington and doesn't reach further than Newtown (if you can call the scarce hotspots of Newtown coverage).
So where is it available? Hotspots (and some "tips") after the jump.
- Although the hotspot is located in St Paul's Cafe the wifi can still be picked up in Fuel, where they serve better coffee.
- Easily the most hotspots and in places where people have lunch, yay! Wifi and Kapai?
- Good luck using the wifi in Justice park
- The Michael Fowler/Town Hall hotspot is perfect for that boring conference
- The Bucket Fountain is a wifi hotspot! (Though for some reason its listed as "the waterfall")
- Newtown's hotspots are in the hospital, Mary Potter Hospice and the library. Come on Newtown Cafes, we want wifi!
Oh I know all about the free wifi in the airport (lots of waiting time) and the free suburban wifi (thank you Anonymous wifi-donater of Tauranga for making my holiday more bearable). There unsecured ones in town too.
We might do a free-wifi post later.
Im sorry? what is all the talk about city wide wifi? and for free??
more details would be greatly appreciated.
i dont care if it costs $20-$30 month, i would love to have city wide wifi (even just central city) for my laptop and ipod touch.
There's a rumour that certain squiggly icons spraypainted on city pavements designate unsecured private wi-fi hotspots. Unfortunately I cannot substantiate (seriously, I can't.. I'm not just being mysterious).
I remember the BBC doing a piece on that in the late 90's where corporate wifi was "leaking" onto the street.

Dont forget the Free wifi in the airport for those long waits at the gate.
