O Temperance, O Mores

Posted by The Masked Barfly on Thursday, 08 Jan 2009

So, in accordance with rumours that have been floating around for a few months now, The Temperance is closing. So long: we hardly knew you.

But things aren't so simple. According to the article, it's more of a stoush between the head leaseholder (Dominion Breweries) and the operator (Andrew Gibson): the receivers have been called in, but it is expected to reopen by this weekend. Apparently, the Queensgate Mall of pubs was actually turning a profit.

Oh. And here were we thinking that this was a sign that Wellingtonians had some taste after all.

And here were we thinking that this was a sign that Wellingtonians had some taste after all.

Whew. Now I don't feel so bad for thinking that. It sucks for anyone to go out of business, and I feel for the staff especially who will now be without jobs at a difficult economic time. That said, and without being callous, I just can't bring myself to feel sad for Temperance.

I hate when the big boys pass off their awful product as craft beer because it's "micro brewed". Come on DB, if you want to brew decent beer, just do it. Don't build a giant booze palace, with a "micro brewery" turning out nasty swill and then market it as the place to go. Marketing is a tool for promoting good product, not convincing the public that your swill is tasty well made beer. It would be nice to say "the market has spoken", but it seems more that, as barfly stated, it's a management issue. Oh well. Roll on small boutique brewpubs!

An Auckland based law firm is seeking the location and service address for Thomas (Andrew) Gibson of Gibson Security and The Temperance (in receivership). Any information would be appreciated.

Happy to help! You will find Andrew Thomas Gibson, actually born: Thomas Andrew Gibson of the Temperance Bar, Loaded Hog, Gibson Security at 116 Liverton Road, Belmont, Lower Hutt. Andrew known as Gibbo for obvious reasons can also be found at the Chicargo Sports Cafe at the waterfront in Wellington. Failing that, visit the splash club or the more popular massage parlours in Wellington and you will find him there!

yes he is in auckland aparently running the place that dave O'Reilly likes to attend

... someone is trying to tell me something. I'd no sooner posted the above comment than I was hit with a banner ad, suggesting I study marketing at Victoria University.

I'm going to go with... no. Thanks. ;)

Some retailers seem doomed from the beginning - the concept was wrong. Too big and too boozy for Blair St. It didn't fit the market or the area. And it is a shame to see such energy and money wasted so lets hope it reinvents itself with more success

Mr Gibson's stale footprint, stamping a hub of uncreative, generic bars puts shame to the name "Cultural Capital". I understand that for those that need their fix of Top 20 doof doof every Saturday night, these places become your shrine to short-skirts and, occasionally, if your lucky perhaps a date with Chlamydia.

I am a staunch Wellington rugby fan, but do we need to have The Temperance as the 'home of Wellington Rugby'. Why can't Wellington be the 'home of Wellington rugby?'. "So come in and check out our stunning décor, try one of our exquisite meals or enjoy a drink and soak in the fantastic ambience of New Zealand's largest bar" quotes The Temperance website. (oh and I love it that they can't even spell Brewery right on the site!). That's some swift marketing there Mr Gibson, but obviously not swift enough to catch those closing doors.

It all depends on whether one agrees that bigger is better? Maybe on the Viaduct Harbour, but not in quirky, unique Wellington. James Wyatt would be turning in his grave to know that with $4 million the creative parameters of The Temperance can only spread as far as the eye can see in the Freedom or Ikea catalogues.

The food: miserable. The drinks, apart from hearing a story about Mr Gibson throwing a young lad (who was apparently minding his own business, enjoying a drink) through the double glass front windows of The Temperance within days of opening.at least DB is the head leaseholder of this monstrous scar on the Wellington club scene, the one smart move Mr Gibson made.. Funny that the mouse behind the pokey-machine funded Establishment and the cut-throat Gibson Security, has finally had his tail caught.this time by the media. Let the story roll on..

There are pokies in the Establishment? Where?

LOLerskates!

Thomas Andrew Gibson or is it Andrew Thomas Gibson of Gibson Security, The Establishment and the Tmperance. Which Gibson, that would depend on which one owes you money! Yes, an angry dwarf, uneducated, ex-bouncer who is a stranger to the truth. Gibson is a dirty, sleaze who preys on young women and attempts to dazzle them with his obese twin chins whilst plastering them with shots in the hope of a quick fondle. It's about time Gibson left the great city of Wellington and grew up, paid his creditors and finally understood the honesty and integrity.

Yeh the guys a crook' Me and a lot of other people haven't been paid for working for Gibson Security this year's Wellington Cup Day!

Give Andrew Gibson a call on ****
(I have edited out the number, we don't want to deal with the implications of your post - Jo)

maybe you should get shot

No problem with being shot! add this to your anger problem Mr. Gibson...

Okay folks, let's not let poor old Andrew Gibson take this all on himself, don't forget his LARGE former business partner, Mr. Jamie Hood Wilson of Chameleon Consultants. I guess the big man could have thought he was backing the winning horse?! Pays to do your research first and listen to people that know the wee man.

really y dont you go see him. i understand he is easy to contact. i have worked for him for 15 years and he has never missed a beat with me. i recently went overseas and just got back. it's funny. all the staff for your so called wellington cup day were paid from what daniel told me. I too worked it yes it was a week late. my understanding is everyone one got paid when wellington raacing paid. its been like that for the four years i have worked for him out there. now hospitality. My understanding is that all staff got paid. and DB own trinity group now. it is clear on company web site who owns it. If you have got a problem with AG ring me anytime to discuss and we can meet as well. (admin: mobile number edited out -- we don't really allow personal info to be published on the site if we can't confirm it's come from the actual person).

well come on hunter come be hunted lol

So long: we hardly knew you.

Fly, are you implying that some or all of us had at least a passing acquaintance with Temperance? Cos that's a fairly serious allegation!

Hadyn's picture

The Fly implicated him/herself a while ago

Always someone bigger around the corner that will do the same thing to you. I would hope this humbles Andrew a bit. Its a shame many staff will be unsure about their jobs and that many who foolishly trusted Andrew 'look after number 1' Gibson will lose money from the work put into the fitout of this monstrous oversized would be DB tax dodge.

Slightly off topic, but has anyone seen the courtenay arms has been transformed (almost overnight) into a "kiwiana" bar. It looks flippin awful!

I suspect it's supposed to look like a 1960's bach/crib. Someone's definitely gone overboard there.

Mishon8's picture

have yet to really see anyone in there. maybe i should give it a try - i might be the first

Wow, you guys sneer a lot.

Why shouldn't there be room for a bar like Temperance?

Where would you have its clientele go, if not there?

I dunno. The Hutt, maybe?

clovenhoof's picture

Any of the bars on Courtenay Place?

The latest, from Stuff:
Publican strips bar in row with brewery over assets
A giant Wellington bar has given DB Breweries a financial hangover after nearly $100,000 worth of equipment was stripped from the complex by the departing publican.
Highlights--

  1. Gibson carried out a night raid to remove nearly $100,000 of widescreen televisions, furniture, sound equipment, cash registers and alcohol
  2. The Loaded Hog has also gone into receivership
Robyn's picture

Am I right in thinking that the Loaded Hog in only in receivership because it was the guarantor for Temperance. i.e. it's being cashed up to pay off the Temperance billz. Which makes me think that the Hog will be with us for a long time yet.

stephen clover's picture

You would be right.

stephen clover's picture

Also, I was just thinking that in terms of widescreen televisions, furniture, sound equipment, cash registers and alcohol, $100K is S F A.

That's true, and it doesn't mean that the Hog isn't a going concern. It is to be sold, though, and that means there's an outside chance that someone else will take it over and do something half-decent with it.
I'm not holding my breath, though.

stephen clover's picture

that means there's an outside chance that someone else will take it over and do something half-decent with it.

..like.. make their beers half-decent instead of butterscotch-tainted cack?

Reing me Mike Cornell pretend propert investor what eva ***-***-*** (admin: mobile number removed, see previous comments on personal info)   Im looking for some more property and business to purchase and loose. I heard he got fired from a security job.

Hey! Andrew Gibson has new friends, he's not only in with the poker fraudster, David (Dave) Wilson but now he's struck a deal with some more future victims and is working with the Chicargo Bar, Waterfront, Wellington (next to the TSB Arena), go find him there!
