On the ball

Submitted by Tom on Wednesday, 14 Mar 2007.

Get your mask ready: it's time to party quasi-anonymously with friends and strangers at a Venetian Masquerade Ball. Champagne! Chandeliers! Canapes! Cleavage! (if the poster is anything to go by)

Ballo di Sciocco poster

Stately Dransfield House in upper Willis Street will play the gracious host for "Ballo di Sciocco" on the 31st of March. The venue and the imagery may me old-fashioned, but the ball itself must be Generation Next, since it has a myspace page. Looking at the organisers' page and list of friends, I get the feeling this will be no ordinary ball.

Tickets $120 from Madmat on 027 290 3591.

$120? Woaaah!

Is that expensive? It's over ten years since I last went to a proper ball, and I'm pretty sure that they cost at least that much even then. I guess it depends upon how quickly all the booze disappears.

It does sound pretty expensive for something you get tickets to by calling a cellphone number and that doesn't include dinner. I mean, I think tickets to the Great Ball in Hamilton, with a TV advertising campaign and many themed rooms and full dinner etc were $150. Granted, it was in Hamilton though...

I'm trying to think back to the last masked ball I went to, and I think it was at the OPT back in about '95. The tickets cost well over a hundred, and then there was the hundred or so I spent on a custom made mask and $300 for a matching waistcoat. I think the idea of these sorts of thing is that they're not just another night out (and it's pretty easy to blow at least $120 on an ordinary big night out), but something you plan and save for for a while.

$120 isn't too bad - the Winter Festival Ball in Queenstown is about $200 each. Crazy. Cool blog by the way. This is my first time here and came about it through MyBlogLog. I had just listed my new blog/info sharing site for kiwis and came accross your blog. If you get a chance check out http://www.sharemynz.co.nz
