Decaffinated but decent

One of the saddest parts about growing older is discovering that caffeine and I are not good friends. This is heartbreaking, because I love coffee and would happily drink it all day long if I could. But I can’t. And I don’t mean I have to ask Monterey to cut me off at four cups […]

Plenty to wine about

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they feel the need to leave Wellington, even if it’s just for one day. No really, it happens! And a particularly good day to get out of town, if you don’t like the colour green, or potatoes, or Guiness or drunken fake-Irish louts, would be this Saturday. So where to go to get away? How about a wine festival – after we all know, that wine drinkers are a better class of people than beer drinkers – somewhere out of town but still nearby?

Well it just so happens that March 17 is your lucky day, with not one but two festivals taking place nearby. There’s the Wairarapa Wines Harvest Festival in Gladstone (as well as the International Balloon Fiesta and the day before Round the Vines, and also the Great Wellington Wine and Food Festival in Paekakariki. So how do you choose which one to go to when they both cost $25 for an entrance fee? Take our quiz to find out.

A Definitive Ranking of Some of Wellington’s Most Cursed Locations

Cursed places. You might be familiar with them. Places you walk into and it feels like there’s ghosts, places that are a bit spooky or a bit weird or send a chill up your spine. To put it more colloquially – bad vibes. A place doesn’t have to be dilapidated to be cursed – I […]

Review: Big Dumb Cats

We are all just big dumb cats, stumbling around on two legs, expecting our feline overlords to hunt food for us to keep us alive. Daniel John Smith’s Big Dumb Cats is part cat facts, part family parable, and all great comedy with a poignant message. Smith’s in the midst of an exciting office fashion […]

Naked girls. Reading. In Wellington.

In advance of Naked Girls Reading; the motherhood edition this Saturday at the Fringe Bar, I put a few questions to its producer, Hugo Grrrl. Okay, first off. Naked girls reading – what in the heck is this? And who are you? Naked Girls Reading is exactly what it sounds like – it’s completely naked […]

Chasing the Black Dog with beer

Last night we went to the opening of the new Black Dog brewery on Cuba Street, and, spoiler alert, it was bloody delightful. All pics were supplied by the publicist because if you follow us on Twitter, you’ll know I can’t photograph for shit. A confession: I had never been to the old Black Dog […]
