Saving Your Hard-Earned Money

Submitted by Hadyn on Monday, 30 Jun 2008.

Here at Wellingtonista Towers we associate the word "cheap" with "cheerful". So when this email sailed into our mailbox we were very happy:

hey wellingtonista,

what with the price of cheese these days, i though I'd pass on the word on the grapevine that civic video in Miramar has dropped the price of new release rentals to $3.99 for the foreseeable future

that's one quarter the price of a block of cheese

or the way things are going - a litre of petrol

i have not been promised any free movies or cheese in return for sending this email to you

maybe just pop in and see for yourself the awesomeness of the place. you may even get some free movies. or cheese.

regards

richie

And despite Richie's disregard for capital letters (and no free movies for us either) we pass the savings onto you.

And remember if you have any tips like this one send them through: info@wellingtonista.com

There's obviously a great deal of variety to be had when shopping around for your videos. I've seen shops charge up to $9 for the latest ones. Don't think I've ever got one for $3.99 though!

Max, don't a lot of shops do $1 for back catalogue stuff? You ain't lookin hard enough matey!

yeah but by a time a dvd is 7 day release it can be year on from it's initial release.

personally i'm a fan of the public library, new releases for a whole week if you get them first

The video store at Crofton Downs (in the same little mall as the Woolworths) has $4 new releases all the time, plus a couple of other cheap deals for weeklies..

I am honest that was a wide ranging statement I didnt back up! What I did mean though is if you do a cost/selection amalgamated can come up tops, Aro obviously is awesome for selection but not for price or length of time (3 days is a bit ridiculous)

I agree with Jo that United Video is the biz when it comes to prices. I know the people who own the Newtown & Brooklyn one, and Brooklyn at least has a totally choice selection too.

I always feel bad for the guy in the Video Sleezy in Newtown. I'll for something like Plan 9 from Outer Space and he'll sigh, slump his shoulders and say, "we don't have that".

Meanwhile the 90 copies of the Matthew McCaugnahy/Kate Hudson vehicle are sitting staring at him with their DEAD EYES!

Venture a little further to United,Hadyn, they have a good selection, even if they almost destroyed me by not having Carnivale Season Two. Thank goodness the one in town did, although if that gets turned into a restaurant I dunno what people would do!

Yeah but then you're asking me to choose the convenience of a good selection over the convenience of a video store roughly 100m from my house.

It's like, 50 extra metres! And bonus: park in MacDonalds' parking if you're extra lazy, or on the street.

"50 extra metres"
What crazy measurement system are you using :)
According to Google maps it's 500m

And McCaughnahey/Hudson isn't so bad...(I'm living a lie!)

Also I think it's becoming clear I have no idea how to spell Matthew McChaugnesy

Ah ha! I've been trying for ages to discover the real meaning of like used in this context. Apparently it means a margin of error of 450m.

Plan 9 is very boring - not so-bad-its-good, just so-bad.

We didn't have a "video" category.

Also, you don't like Highlander? This isn't Highlander 2, or Highlander: Endgame (starring Mario van Peebles)

I dunno.. Misc? Suburbs? Retail?

Highlander

Sean Connery as an immortal Spaniard with an annoying moustache? Spare me...

I liked the TV series better.

"Sean Connery as an immortal Spaniard with an annoying moustache? Spare me..."

Hah yes, a lowlander as a spaniard, and a french guy as a highlander. Inspired casting!

I like it, but I hate them ALL for deceiving me into paying to see Highlander 2.

and a french guy as a highlander

Is THAT why Christopher Lambert's accent is so annoying? Cos he's French? It all makes sense now...

Oui.

Check out Subway, with Isabelle Adjani. Although he was also Greystoke wasn't he? I guess you get a french accent if you're brought up by apes.
