Stay away from our statues!

Submitted by Hadyn on Monday, 14 Apr 2008.

Solace in the Wind 1As reported by Brenda in the comments, the Solace in the Wind statue was removed after it had been vandalised.

According to the story of Stuff:

The sculpture had to be removed from the Taranaki St Wharf earlier this week after vandals forced it from a nearly vertical position to a 60-degree angle over the water.

Apparently some kids had climbed up and were jumping into the water, but according to the creator, Max Patte, that wouldn't have done it.

Two stainless steel pins – each with a shear strength of three tonnes – had fixed the sculpture to the wharf, he said.

It would have taken a number of people and a lot of trouble to loosen the fixings as much as they had.

..."I can't imagine why anyone would have put this much effort into vandalising."

Well, the statue is back now. And I think I can say from all of us here at the Wellingtonista: "don't be touching our statue again!"

I'm glad to hear it's back - I missed it.

Some people actively hate nice things. I'm not sure why.

Because they're douchebags? Because breaking things is the closest they'll ever get to making a mark in the world?

"don't be touching our statue again!"

That statue has been subject to plenty of inappropriate touching in the past. That's okay, just don't hurt the poor fellow.

Careful he might end up like Victor Noir

I'm so happy Solace is back. I love seeing him in the mornings when the sun is rising and washing him in light. Truly beautiful.

Another one of my favorite statues, Ruamoko (the columns on the corner of Lambton and Stout streets), was vandalised a few weeks ago. What's wrong with these people?

I saw that today. I love that statue. Come on, an anarchy sign? It's so unoriginal and unnecessary!

I saw in one of the next posts some info on the WCC Fix-It service, so I emailed them. They called me back within a few hours saying that they would have a crew there tomorrow to remove the graffiti. Can you believe the speedy service? Amazing.

I've used the fix-it service a few times to get little things around the 'hood sorted out. Almost always respond within 24 hours, nearly always have it sorted out within a couple of days.

Big ups to whoever runs it!

When I walked past on Monday morning I saw that the grafiti had been removed. They didn't get to it as fast as they said, but given the weather last week it's not too surprising. Pretty good service from WCC.

But weird that no one told them earlier. I finally saw the tag yesterday. A big yellow A? That's not even anarchy

Hey man, remember, with anarchy, there are no rules.
