The Phoenix Foundation - Bright Grey
With a shiny US record deal under their belts, The Phoenix Foundation are getting ready to take over the world with their upcoming third album entitled "Happy Ending" (which dispenses with - disappointingly - the equine-themed nature of their previous two releases: "Horse Power" & "Pegasus").
Here's the first single and video from the album, shot, I'm told, in Island Bay, and directed by fellow Wellingtonian and Oscar-nominated film-maker, Taika Waititi.
I can't take credit, it was the guy in the brown leather jacket (you see him briefly sifting around the back of the set around the same time as the Delorean appears) who told me.
So it's a homage rather than a rip-off. The song is pretty good, but the video doesn't suit it at all.
Oh, never meant to imply it was a "rip-off".
Though if it's obscure enough, what is a homage but a rip-off that noone gets.
I like this new album very much - sometimes I get a kind of jangly early 80s Dunedin sound, then its radiohead, but all through a uniquely phoenix filter (philter). Yes, don't give up my day job to become a music critic, but big YAY!

Noizy, you don't think horses and happy endings are related? Haven't you ever seen Freddy Got Fingered?
