The TAWAs: Best Coffee

Here are the nominees for Best Coffee

In most cities around the world, the citizens have blood pumping through their veins. Here in Wellington, we have coffee. It’s available everywhere, from the library to the petrol station, but certain places make our hearts beat the fastest. The taste of the coffee is important, of course, but so is the atmosphere in which we buy it and the service that delivers it.

Green Land (23 Kate Shephard Pl)
We like that Green Land serves its Fairtrade organic Havana coffee in Huhtamaki Bioware compostable cups or you can bring your favourite mug along for a 50 cent discount. We also like the range of sweet treats they sell as compliments. But as this category is all about the coffee, we’ll take it the way they make it – good and strong and hot, thanks.

That place at the Beehive end of The Terrace owned by a guy called Tony (By the kebab place called Daniel's Fine Foods)
If you work on The Terrace, chances are you’ve walked past this hole-in-the-wall roastery. In fact, if you work anywhere near the Beehive, chances are you’ve had coffee here and you will definitely have smelled it when they roast the beans. In the morning (if you don’t have milk) you will be waiting less than a minute for your coffee. But “fast coffee” doesn’t mean “instant coffee”. The coffee is always exquisitely brewed and incredibly flavoursome. And it doesn’t matter if you can’t remember the name…

Caffé ItalianoCaffe Italiano (229 Cuba St)
We realise that it might be as controversial as hell in Wellington to like coffee that’s not actually roasted here (and what would the Italians know about coffee, anyway?), but there’s something about the blends at Caffé Italiano that make them particularly delicious. It may be the influence of the superb cake cabinet and the attractive waitstaff, but we think their coffee could stand up on its own by itself and still be counted.

Vivace (153 Featherston St)
Vivace macchiatoWe all, somewhat grudgingly, will admit those damned Cantabrians know how to play rugby. But, we Wellingtonistas might ask, can they roast? Vivace on Featherston Street is the local outpost of the Christchurch café and roastery of the same name; and it answers our question: yes, they can, and very nicely too (though we wish we could report otherwise). Good coffee abounds in Wellington; so what keeps us returning to Vivace is the intimate, continental atmosphere created by the very small space it occupies, and, let’s face it, the friendly, talented, and hot baristas who seem to make a point of learning one’s name and order within a few return visits. In other words, it’s your local caffeteria.

Peoples Coffee (12 Constable St, Newtown)
We are occasionally given over to loving hippification, so Peoples Coffee (no matter how angry their apostrophe catastrophe makes us) has to be a contender. With its Adbuster magazines, the crammed communal line and the refugee community contingent, it is hippy without the dirty smell of patchouli. And then there’s all the single bean and blend beans to buy; the staff with excellent barista skills who make lattes in a traditional glass with pretty swirly patterns on top and a perfect extraction every time; and all the nifty shelving – Peoples is one heck of a cafe.

Hi the place at the end of the terrace next to Daniel's Fine Food is called Coffee. And yup it's the best coffee and service you can find. It took Tony and his son two days to remember what I ordered and from then on it was a flick of the eyebrows and the most sweet smelling brew was there. No need to talk which for a non-morning person suited me just fine. And Daniels kebabs next door cannot be beaten either - well unless you go to Phoenincian Falafel next to Delux. Even then it's a close call but good to know the city is bookended with damn fine falafel.

Your story is the exactly the same as mine (including the kebabs mmmmm lamb and falafel). I was very sad the day I changed jobs and wouldn't be stopping there for coffee anymore.

Is that a MIME making the coffee at Peoples? Dear lord no! Who let him out of the box?

Robyn's picture

Someone threw some coffee at him and he had a moment of realisation: The box has no walls. And then a recond realisation: My, this coffee is delicious. His fate was sealed.

Yay for vivace espresso coffee!
Definitely the pick of the bunch if I don't say so myself. If any of you are also feeling the same way, and provided you have facebook, why not join the vivace espresso group? (under common interest-food & Drink)
By doing so, you can offer suggestions, improvements, give you kind/not-so-kind criticisms in order that we can give you the bestest ever service! :)

My favourite is Tony's at tne end of the Terrace. Good coffee and great service. The atmosphere is good too. I look forward to the experience every morning.

But... but... what about the fine, fine coffee at Factory on Hopper st? Coffee supreme, people, good stuff. Not to mention friendly baristas and AMAZING food. Anyway to nominate them? Peoples, however, comes a close second.

Anyway to nominate them?
Sure, if you have a time machine

Much respect to Supreme.

I think they know how I feel about their great service and fine coffee.

The coffee and service at Vivace on Featherston is the best!

The coffee and service at Vivace on Featherston is the best!

Vivace is a class act....easily the best service and style around

Vivace is AWESOME. I've heard that they travel to Columbia on the weekends to give back rubs to the guys picking thier coffee.

I haven't actually been in there, so I don't know how their coffee is. I voted for Peoples as every time I've been into their Garrett Street shop the coffee has made my head explode with delight.

Joanna's picture

Yeah, but it's Peoples in Newtown that was nominated, buddy!

Ryanja's picture

When suggesting nominations I just put 'Peoples Coffee'. Is their a need to specify the exact location? Surely thier coffee is just as good at either place.

I've heard that they're now serving Peoples at the cafe in the Library. I might have to duck in there soon to give it a try.

Taking onboard public suggestions, we as the Wellingtonista made the final call and nominated a particular place. Peoples on Garrett Street and Peoples on Constable Street will be operated by the same people, but the cafe in the library is Clark's - they're operated by different people using Peoples beans - just like Kiallis, Prannah and a whole bunch of other places.
Our nomination wasn't exclusive to the beans used, that's why location was a factor (along with food, service, magazines, decor etc). I'm not saying that the coffee isn't any good at Garrett Street - I've never been there - it just wasn't the place we nominated.
I'm being a bit pedantic here, but do you get what I mean?

Ryanja's picture

Ahhh, I see now that it does say best coffee and location. I'll have to make it a point to try the original shop in Newtown. If the place is any better than the Garrett Street shop I'll be very pleased.

We here at vivace love our customers!!
And our coffee, as a manager I've never had such a passionate and easy going team. I count myself very lucky.
