The TAWAs: Best Non-Drinking Destination
Here are the nominees for Best Non-Drinking Destination
Sometimes you just need time out from all that eating and drinking and dancing and hangovers. Sometimes you have the little-uns with you. Sometimes you have the folks with you. And so sometimes you need to just wander and explore all the rest that Wellington offers.
The Cuba Quarter (Cuba St)
Sometimes an entire city district can be an attraction in itself. Sure, Cuba St and its environs are known for shops, cafes and booze, but you can wile away many an hour just wandering about and looking at the buildings, graffiti, street life and weirdos.
Wellington Zoo (200 Daniel St, Newtown)
Lions and tigers and bears! Oh, my! Perfect for the kids to see some of the worlds’ most exotic animals. And due to the closeness of the surrounding houses, the zoo can be enjoyed even if you don’t go in. Though apparently the animals will escape and eat Newtown in the first big earthquake.
The South Coast Marine Sanctuary
Who needs an aquarium when you can immerse yourself in the icy Antarctic waters and see the fish in their natural environment?
The Weta Cave (Corner of Camperdown Rd and Weka St, Miramar)
Sick of tourists trying to get snaps of their sets, the good folk at Weta made themselves a wee cave that not only showcases their amazing visual talents but lets you purchase some of it. You start with a video introduction by Richard Taylor before looking at actual props form various Weta films.
The Botanic Gardens
Even if you’re not particularly into greenery, the combination of views, sculpture, a scattering of buildings and easy access via the Cable Car make this a great destination.
