The TAWAs: Most Needed
Here are the nominees for Most Needed
We love Wellington. It’s really very good, but like many things it could do with a little more. As such, here is our short list of demands. (Note: we still want light rail, but we figured that was given these days)
Fully integrated Snapper for public transport
Ok, so it’s available on Go Wellington buses, but we’d like to be able to use it on Mana, Newlands and Hutt buses, the train network and the ferries and, dammit, the Cable Car.
A proper Spanish restaurant or tapas bar
There are a few places that are close, but don’t quite meet the definition. Duke Carvell’s is fantastic, but is more pan-Med than Spanish. Chill has some very good Spanish-style tapas, but is let down by limited hours and a terrible name. We want something cosy but raucous, with reasonably authentic tapas and/or pintxos, and a great list of Spanish wines and sherries.
A 24-hour diner
It’s the middle of the night. You’ve had a few drinks, your posse’s started to thin out and you’re thinking of calling it a night, but not before you get something to eat. At the moment, your only choice for 4am nutrition is kebabs. We want a sit-down diner, who’ll cook us up something nice and filling before we taxi home.
A little shelter
Wellington is known for its wind, yet at its various windy corners the public has no shelter from the cold. Standing at the intersection of Courtenay and Taranaki isn’t much fun in a gale and is a hundred times worse if there’s rain too.
A monthly Wellington magazine
There are already magazines dedicated this fine city, but they’re mostly filled with lightweight articles and advertorial. We want something substantial, insightful and intelligent – like Metro magazine but with a Wellington focus (and without the endless articles on schools and mortgages.)
