Wellington's World Cup alter-ego
There's been a bit of discussion up here at Wellingtonista Towers as to just who we should be supporting in the World Cup. We need a team with whom we Wellingtonians can identify with - soccer's equivalent of the Hurricanes: a team that blows hot and cold; a team full of star names, but who inevitably fall at the final hurdle; a team that are a joy to watch, but typically lose to more dour, joyless sides.
To that extent, we came up with a short-list of four: Holland, Spain, Portugal and Mexico. All these teams have been frustrating their fans for years, making the latter stages on relatively regular occasions, only to lose to more methodical plodders like Germany or Italy, or falling to the perenially brilliant Brazilians.
At the moment, we're veering towards Spain, partly because they're sure to be a good source of sporting ups and downs, but mostly because they're our Earth Sandwich partner, and if that doesn't count for something, what does? Any votes from anyone else?
And, tell you what, there's some 'interesting' hits for "World Cup" on Google image search. Keep your eyes on the ball, son!
I don't look so good in orange (due mainly to the ginga-factor). So not Holland.
I have always supported Portugal since we visited and discovered how lazy they are. With the relaxed attitude and sheer volume of alcohol they drink I'm surprised one of them (let alone 11) are fit enough to play football. Also they are, like New Zealand, a small country next to a large country that they hate.
Im all for Holland. No one disappoints at the world cup like the Dutch.
They are very similar to the Hurricanes in that nobody knows who which team will turn up. Is it Holland? Is it the Netherlands? Maybe the Dutch might attend this time? See. Its a lottery.
I quite like Argentina. The pale blue and white bars are very fetching.
Although there is less excitement for the ladies there now that Batistuta has retired...
Yeah, but they've won the thing in the past. A couple of times, even, so it's not like they've even got Wellington's flash-in-the-pan tendencies going on.
Far too successful for our requirements.
The Netherlands were looking annoyingly composed and content - not at all Hurricane-like. That was, until I spotted this: Van Persie and Robben play down rift
Admittedly, not quite a late night handbag incident, but a good signal that the Dutch are back to their old ways. Hooray, go Holland.
Well, it's looking more and more like the Netherlands, innit?
Might wait until the pool round is complete before making the final call, though...
Can I put in a late bid for the Czech Republic, purely on account of how very pretty and emo Tomas Rosicky is? I can totally imagine him in very tight black jeans and chucks at Indigo the San Francisco Bath House.
Oh, and another thing - does anyone have any recommendations for a good place to watch World Cup games, for a person who doesn't normally watch sport or go to sport-type bars?
The czech republic are a little too good for our purposes i think. Though with an aging (but still excellent) 33 year old hero forward (much like our Tana)in Jan Koller and an empty trophy cabinet, they should be given some consideration perhaps.

I'm voting for Holland, on account of being half from it. And also as a welcome to Martha, since everyone knows Petone is most famous for its Dutch shop.
(Also: being able to edit your own comments is number one excellent)
