Newtown: it’s sometimes more than a bit shit
On Wednesday night, our next door neighbours were burgled. On Friday night, my house was burgled. A couple of weeks ago someone tried to climb in my window while I was sleeping. My flatmate’s car has been restolen from outside our house, but ha ha, sucks to be them because the previous thieves had used up all the petrol in it. It’s times like this that I need to be reassured of the good things in Newtown. Things like:
- The otters at the zoo!
- The haloumi at Cafe Kialis
- The macademia & chicken salad at Baobob
What are your favourite things about Newtown right now?

I’m an ex resident 🙂 — but here is my list (hi Matty J) of favourite N town things and places:
Red Pandas; Spider Monkeys; Kajal Creations for cheap georgous (Indian) jewellery; Masala tea bags at Moshims; late afternoon sun; Coin Save and the shop across from it; The Afro mix cafe (if internet is down at home); Baobab; The town belt walkways; pizza’s from the Med Food Warehouse; all the different biscotti flavours from Kiallas; t‑shirts from Duncan and Prudence; Hello Kitty stuff from Mr Thank you and the mural outside the City Council Flats in Daniel Street, Newtown Unity

One more vote for the Kiallis menu, specifically the rhubarb and cinnamon pancakes. They change depending on whoever’s working in the kitchen, but never disappoint.
I am in paris at the moment and reading all this made me homiesick. the buildings here, even forgetting the towers, are way too high for people to crawl through your window. Plus people here never walk the streets in their pjs, not like newtown on dole day. big ups to planet spice, but lets not froget fish fins… is Leos good too?

OK, i have to differ there. We too love the pancakes, but the last time we went, they came out cold and sad. Which was all the more disappointing because they’re usually so good.
Hey Leo’s crumbed fish is fantastic and the chips are always good… Fish Fins should be good but the family domestics going on behind the counter have always been more interesting than their fish.

Monterys aka orange county? Dude, Monterey is in Northern California, Orange County is in Southern California, for starters. Apart from that, while I don’t know about their marital statuses, I have never seen anyone who looks remotely like a Barbie doll in Monterey Newtown. Except for me, of course.
Dont forget newtown bakery across the road from the library makes the best fresh uncut bread and donut!! mmmmmhungry much!

I love the chicken kebabs from Mr bun, the thrift shops where you can buy great stuff, the children’s park on the corner, michael from Newtown garage 2008 Ltd really is agreat honest mechanic, highly recommended!, the library always nice and comfy especially on a cold wintry wellington day
Newtown has occasional outbursts of racism and pathetic abusive activity from a guy pretending to be homeless or disabled outside the New World supermarket, he’s just a horrible man — if you call the cops, the don’t respond for ages because it’s just Newtown and everybody knows the buildings are flaky and run down, the shops are cheap, there are a LOT of mental health people wandering about and the power lines look crooked and awful.
It’s better than Aro Valley though; pretentious hippies with homes so stuffed full of hoarded hippie rubbish you can’t move, junkies that look and act like human sh*t, “cool” mums and of course winter rats the size of gumboots.
SO, yeah — for all of the down-market glamour and poverty of Newtown, it’s a way better place in that sense, also — great swim and sauna options and lots of fruit and veges in weekend market.
