A plan for 2012
So imagine if the worst thing in the world* happens, and Wellington loses its bid to continue hosting the Sevens. What should we do?
Simple! Just don't tell anyone. Richard Maclean at the council is great at communicating truths so surely he'd be even better at telling lies. We just pretend that the sevens are still on. Hire a couple dozen students to run up and down the field in the stadium, and who'd know the difference? No one actually goes along for the rugby do they? People will still get dressed up, there'll be glass and vomit and extra amounts of hate crimes (hey bogans who threw cans at my friends who dared to hold hands in public: you're fucking losers) all over the streets as usual, and we get to keep that 16 million dollars or so that the games bring to the city. This fly would be well-happy, because I do love to live in shit, after all.
*Not really

Actually, bearing in mind that I share your feelings about the vileness, one thing the Sevens costume stuff has going for it is that it is a ground-up carnival. It's demotic, chaotic, unmanaged and unofficial, which is pretty good for a massive community event.
If you could merge the democratic participation of the Sevens with the organised wonder of the Cuba St Carnival we would have something more marvellous than either.
pretty much every major festival/event around the world (that doesn't have alchohol bans) ends up messy.... it's not the sole domain of sporting events.
as jack said ina recent blog entry - dicks stand out.
apply that one to the 7s, becuase so many people are completly harmless and just have a lovely time.

Did you know this entry was quoted in The Dom Post yesterday, in the Capital Day page? They are mastering the art of copy & paste.
I didn't know that because I hardly ever read the paper. Thanks for letting us know!
this was written by an obnoxious snob. chill out dude.
Hehe, if you search the site for the word 'snob', only posts by Tom come up. But I'm pretty sure that when the Masked Barfly joined us, it said something about being snobby. In fact, don't most of us?
I was quite surprised by how many people actually watched the rugby. There are huge groups of Pacific Islanders who are there for the sole prupose of cheering on their team.
Dicks will be dicks. We've been shoved about by arseholes at the Cuba Carnival too. However, the Sevens Munters make themselves very visable (in more ways than one).
The Masked Barfly has friends?
