Bypass surgery complete. Has the patient survived?
At last, the final stage of the bypass has been opened, and the decades-long drama is drawing to an end. The DomPost reports…
At 6am yesterday, southbound traffic was directed from The Terrace Tunnel onto a one-way Vivian St via a new off-ramp.
At the same time, Buller and Ghuznee streets reverted to two-way streets.
Transit New Zealand project manager Jonnette Adams said some motorists had teething problems with the new layout, but were mostly courteous to each other. Some “tweaking” of intersection lights helped alleviate congestion on other routes linking with the bypass.
A team of engineers would be on hand today to make sure things ran smoothly, Ms Adams said.
Transit opened the northbound section of the bypass in December.
Meanwhile, frustrated Wellingtonians are turning to the Web to vent their anger at delays caused by the region’s transport infrastructure.
Aha! Haven’t they just.
So, how was it for you?
But what really grinds my gears is that… all this stupid bypass shit seems to have been put there to impress the folk who come into the city to work. What about us poor schmoes who LIVE there? If I make the giddy mistake of trying to turn out my street into Taranaki St it takes me a split second to realise things aren’t what they used to be and then I curse the puppy-eating-baby-cutter for the following 15 minutes that it takes to make it ALL the way down to the fucking entrance to Karo Drive. And I glare crazily at the old lady with the zimmer frame who could have lapped us all 20 times. Then I realise the old lady with the zimmer frame is Kerry. And she’s pulling the wings off butterflies!
It makes me want to cry trying to make my way through Wellington now. It never used to be BAD enough to warrant all the money and destruction. Now it’s a fucking shitter of a whore to get across. I live at the town end of Mt Cook and I’d just like to publically thank Kerry Prederghast for sticking her big cock into the city and fucking it hard. Look at all the swears! That’s how mad I am. There is no quick dash to ANYWHERE anymore. All the little sneaky routes I used to take are GONE DADDY GONE. It’s like being in fucking Auckland. Plus there’s congestion now in places where there never was before, but congestion where they may have been traffic at peak hours is ten times worse. Where are the freakin’ benefits here? And Karo Drive is an ugly whore of a road as well. Kerry eats puppies.
I managed to see some keen as mustard driver decide to head southwards on Vivian Street in his ute – AT 10PM SATURDAY NIGHT!!!
Yeah, I might try going to Cuba St again tomorrow morning, since the off part opened heading down Willis St from Brooklyn by foot is just a nightmare. Particularly the Ghuznee intersection – though maybe once I am used to the sequence of lights it will be better.
Ok we have a consensus. Those who drive on the “by pass” like/love it, as long as you don’t need to leave it within the city, but those who have to drive either through the city or across the new maze of roads are screwed.
As a Brooklyn resident it is especially hard work whether on the bus, driving, or walking.
Transit NZ and WCC take a bow.
by·pass
Pronunciation: ‘bI-“pas
Function: noun
1 : a passage to one side; especially : a deflected route usually around a town.
Drivers from the Western suburbs wanting to cross town, via Aro St, are funnelled back down Willis St! They’re forced to go deeper into town than they want to or need to, simply to get across it.
There are more traffic lights than before, too – in all directions.
So by definition, it is not really a “bypass” at all.
I read the map, tried to remember where it all went and had a go. Sure it will take time to get used to but beyond that I really can’t see the problem, Wellington is not that big after all. If you want a traffic nightmare try London.
