'Pocket-city at the Edge of the World'

Submitted by Em on Wed, 2006-07-19 22:54.

The Sydney Morning Herald features a rather rave write-up on Wellington on their website today:

After years of relative obscurity, the city is blossoming. It has reinvented itself as an elegant, modern place without the arrogance that often accompanies such development.

Okay, maybe we could have done without the 'years of relative obscurity' part.

Why does every article about Wellington HAVE to have a photo of the cable car?!?!

Also, Jo, what do you have to say about the first line that claims Wellington has no hubris?

"Wellingtonians are more relaxed and unassuming. They sip Martinborough pinots after work in the stylish Arbitrageur Wine Room and take evening strolls along the promenade at Oriental Bay."

Yes, sipping Martinborough pinot at Arbitrageur is my idea of "relaxed and unassuming". Though to be accurate it would have to be "during" rather than "after" work.

"but no hubris"?!

I'll show you hubris, Sydney Morning Herald, oh yes I will! One day I'll get you.

"Another must-do is a stroll through the Bolton Street Memorial Park, a 19th-century cemetery near the Bolton Hotel."

Not to be missed, I would hasten to add, is the adjacent mass-grave and accompanying amphitheatre.

And I know that on reputation, Logan Brown is the "culinary peak" of Wellington, but despite multiple attempts I'm pretty sure there is a lot better to be had.

Bah humbug. etc.

As for obscurity - hah! Who IS this Sydney guy anyway?

Interesting that 15000 ockers come here every year. Is that a brain drain do you think?

A new look for Wellingtonista.
Possibly it has been linke this for a while, but I usually only use the RSS feed!

hey ben. yeah, made the switch maybe a month or two ago during our blognapped episode.

I know the feeling about only seeing blog entries via RSS.

Sometimes makes me wonder why I bother so much with the look of the site. But I still do...

Joanna's picture

I don't use an RSS Noizy, I care. Keep up the good work!

noizyboy's picture

I shall try!

stupid categories, not working properly...

mutter mutter...

This thing does not seem to accept any form of URL in the homepage field!!

noizyboy's picture

yeah - a few backend problems at the moment. I upgraded over the weekend, and since then have been having a few weird problems. Should be back to normal within a few more days.

(Hi James, lets see if I can remember this...)
Steps to reproduce Homepage problem:
1. enter url sans "http://" in Homepage field
2. hit [preview]
3. get told off for not having "http://" prefix
4. put in http prefix, hit [preview]
5. get told off for not having "http://" prefix
repeat 4..5 til you get annoyed
6. blank/clear Homepage field
7. hit [preview]
8. Look at your comment.
9. enter url WITH "http://" in Homepage field
10. hit [preview]
11. All good... hit [Post comment]

hth. no need to post this ;)

er, yeah, so problem solved?

I tried it, but when I added the http:// bit in step 4, and then previewed, I didn't get the step 5 'told off', but got a successful preview instead.

testing stephen's thing...

and again.

Nope :((
Seems worse, appears to retain my "www.dorkinglabs.com/seht.php" no matter how many times I prefix "http://" and hit [Preview] - just keeps coming back...

Checking/unchecking 'Save my Comment Information for next time' doesn't seem to help either.

noizyboy's picture

so, when you hit preview, the homepage field actually changes the URL to one without the http bit?

it's not just IE playing autocomplete silly-buggers with you?

Hmmm... I use Firefox, but could have been Feedreader playing silly buggers with me.

Seems good now, though.

:))

testing again. entered the address as 'wellingtonista.com' (sans http), then hit post...

...and it spat the dummy on the homepage, so updated to http version...

and it worked.

ok, trying the same thing, sans http, but using the preview first...

...and again, doesn't work. adding the http..., preview and...

...preview works okay. post comment and...

it works. hmmm, weird.
