Rustic Mexican
Well we rushed down to the new venue for Viva Mexico this evening and thoroughly enjoyed that they'd almost completely run out of stock!
Luckily they agreed to sell us what they still had... which was some pretty good enchiladas.
Viva Mexico has just relocated to the Leftbank after moving out of the Wellington markets with the impending construction of the Watermark. Personally I think this isn't a bad thing for them, because they're closer to "the action". And, the selling out of stock is a good indication of what they might have in store.
Mind you, you have to wander way the hell down the back to find them.
The food is really reasonably priced, at $13 for the biggest plate of anything, and is about as authentically Mexican as you'll get in Wellington.
Sweet Mother's Kitchen?! You've got some real competition for the resurgent Mexican-food market!

Do they have hats made out of nachos? Because if they don't, well, why the hell not?
good question, and one you should ask them yourself!
i asked about tamales, and they don't have them on the menu any more (they sell too sporadically).
but they're giving me the recipe!
No, but they do have divorced eggs, and black enchiladas (with mole). Mmmmmmm. Who needs to be a nacho man?
And what about taco salads? Sweet Mother's were polite but dismissive when I asked them.
Ahh but how are their Margaritas? Also,do they make them Jalapeno poppers? They are delish, make em at home myself :)
Ah yes, Viva Mexico's big failing: no license! Then again, SK is also unlicensed, and that helps them stay cheap & cheerful.
Viva Mexico and SMK aren't really competing for the same niche, but it could be time for an FTW post. Which does the best breakfast burrito/quesadilla/huevos rancheros etc?
just had lunch there. black quesadillas. yum.
this was at about Noon - the queue at SK was out the door; I was the only customer at Viva Mexico.
they'll catch on eventually.
in the meantime, more enchiladas for me!!
WOOT!
Where is it exactly?
I was in the Left Bank at 6pm tonight and couldn't see any sign of it, either on the ground level or upstairs.
Right at the very back, past Satay Kingdom and past the alleyway
I had lunch here today - tacos with potato and chicken, with the green salsa, and damn, they were gooood. I would have liked some extra salt though, but I do have very salty tastes.
"I do have very salty tastes"
So I'm told.
