Being the hep cool web cats that we are, the Wellingtonista has recently set ourselves up a Twitter account so that we can send out updates about what you should do with yourselves. If you’re already a twitter user, head on over to our account and sign up to receive the word from the streets, generally at a one-or-two updates per day rate. If you haven’t used Twitter before, we’ve got a little specific how-to after the jump.

What the heck is Twitter? According to their website

Twitter is “a service that asks:“what are you doing? Here’s my latest update:”

But we say that Twitter is an easy & free way to send out a text message (or IM/web update if that’s more your bag) to subscribers. You can both receive updates from friends and post updates from your phone without needing any WAP or complicated gizmos.

What are you planning on doing with Twitter? We want to be able to tell you what’s going on in Wellington in a timely easy manner, so that (for example) late risers can get a “the trolley wires are down, leave earlier for work” warning, or that there’s a drink special on at a bar, or a person in an animal costume on the street for you to molest. It’s just a new idea to us, so no doubt it’ll evolve over time to fit our needs, and your needs too. Because after all, the Wellingtonista love you as much as we love Wellington.

Why do you feel the need to use Twitter? Because we’re hep cool cats and we want to be as down with the kids as Russell. Obviously.

Okay, you’ve sold me. But how can I receive just Wellingtonista texts, and not Jo’s drunken rants to my phone? You can turn off all text notifications in your phone, and then turn on individual ones, by texting “FOLLOW + user name” to Twitter (see the Twitter site for indepth information on how to set up your phone).

Wow, thanks Wellingtonista! You make me look cool and popular That’s not a question, but we’ll gratefully accept the compliment.
