Why Science Fiction is the only legitimate artform of the 20th and 21st centuries

Local artist, writer and intel­lec­tu­al David Cauchi is giv­ing an address at the Film Archive on Sat­ur­day after­noon.

David is a right old char­ac­ter, and also the painter of one of my favourite works of art — enti­tled The fab four (Tas­man, Cook, Du Fresne, De Surville) (above).

In his address David will dis­cuss the ori­gins of sci­ence-fic­tion in the avant-garde art move­ments of the ear­ly 20th cen­tu­ry, and its emer­gence as a dom­i­nant theme in mass-pro­duced pulp fic­tion and film. On the top­ic of “legit­i­mate art­form” he explains “I mean that which exem­pli­fies the cul­ture, the place and time in which the art­work is made”. Also includ­ed in the talk are sev­er­al films from the Archive’s col­lec­tions.
