Eat and eat and eat: win a voucher for Rata Cafe

welly on a plate

Congratulations to Angus who won last week’s prize. This week, to celebrate Wellington on a Plate, thanks to the lovely Positively Wellington Tourism, we have a $100 voucher for Rata Cafe at Zealandia (the bird sanctuary in Karori) to give away.

If you’re the lucky winner, you might want to use it to have lunch in order to get your bearings before a night tour of the sanctuary (the cafe is only open until 5pm, mind) or when you take advantage of the special winter rate of admission to the information centre.

Of course, if you’re just in it for the food, we wouldn’t blame you! Rata has a particularly spectacular deck overlooking the sanctuary, and a menu (PDF) that offers up free range and organic goodness. As part of Wellington on a Plate, they’ve got a special deal for $25

Two courses plus a glass of Wellington regional wine, and a cup of tea or coffee

Main: Braised beef cheeks, creamy polenta and broad bean puree Dessert: Warm chocolate brownie served with cream and winter compote
Lunch wine: Instinct Martinborough Pinot Noir

So, how do you win? Leave us a comment before next Tuesday 5pm telling us either what your favourite bird is, or what else you think should have a sanctuary in Wellington. We’ll draw a winner at random.

We’re having a tiny bit of an issue with an over-vigorous Akismet right now, so if your comment doesn’t show immediately, don’t panic, it’s in the system and I’ll push it through shortly. Hopefully this problem will be fixed over the weekend.

I love fantails. My flatmate made a fantail cake for her baby’s first birthday. Her baby’s name? Rata. Obviously we were meant to win this contest.

For all that they’re very common in Wellington, I do still like hearing the tui.

My favorite bird is a Pterodactyl. Her name is Ophelia.

Melissa July 22, 2010 at 10:26 am

My favourite bird the the Morepork. I love that we have a tiny owl called a Ruru

Aidan July 22, 2010 at 10:06 am

Favourite bird is Kaka. I like the activity of Keas especially around Arthur’s Pass and Kaka seem a close relative, particularly in cheekiness.

I love the little Wax-Eyes.

I’m a sucker for penguins myself. Also Kererus

My favourite bird is the Kaka and I’m always amazed when I see them on bush tracks in Wellington. Over 100 chicks have been hatched at Zealandia, too!

I think there should be a sanctuary for people with hangovers, where greasy food is available without noisiness from other people. But maybe that’s my headache talking.

Favorite NZ bird is the kakapo. How could you not love the fattest parrot in the world?

Louise July 21, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Haha Robyn stole my line!! Otherwise I have to say the Tui that lives a tree in my backyard – sometimes he flies to the train station to wave me off to work!

Michelle Strand July 21, 2010 at 5:26 pm

I LOVE the kereru – we share a similar shape and propensity for intoxicating substances!

Luisa July 23, 2010 at 2:49 pm

to champion a misunderstood genius, i’m picking the ubiquitous crow. a master problem solver, survival specialist and all round badass. i salute you, mr crow.

The scaup duck- it’s very cool with it’s black feathers and yellow (devilsh!) eyes. It’s fun to see them dive really deep (can see them in Queenstown under the harbour).

Maria July 23, 2010 at 5:55 pm

My favorite is the Kakariki. Love the color and the sound it makes.

Jenny July 23, 2010 at 3:15 pm

My favourite bird at Zealandia is the native Saddleback (kokako). So far I’ve yet to spot one outside of the Sanctuary, but maybe one day!

Stu July 25, 2010 at 4:22 pm

The Kereru, definitely.

I love fantails, so cute and cheeky. Love the way they come so close just to show off.

Theresa July 26, 2010 at 10:15 am

My favorite bird? Probably the cardinal (the state bird of Illinois!). As for New Zealand species, it’s hands down the kea.

Richard Aindow July 26, 2010 at 1:59 pm

I love Pukekos – not exactly a genius level bird but great to see faffing about in fields. Ohh, and owls generally. But who doesn’t love owls?

Korimako – the bellbird – because it sounds like home.

Sim July 26, 2010 at 10:07 pm

Kea – lots of personality πŸ˜›

Nikki July 23, 2010 at 8:37 am

My new favourite bird is the goldfinch. I saved one from my cat the other day and got to have a very close look at it for a few seconds before letting it fly free. So beautiful πŸ™‚
