Eat and eat and eat: win a voucher for Sojourn at the James Cook Grand Chancellor
Congratulations to Tracey who wants to be burgered senseless but will also be enjoying a good time at the General Practitioner as well. This week, to celebrate Wellington on a Plate, thanks to the lovely Positively Wellington Tourism, we have a $100 voucher to Sojourn Cafe in the James Cook Grand Chancellor to give away.
It’s true that hotel cafes might not be the first place that springs to mind when you’re thinking about where to eat, but maybe it’s time to reconsider. Sojourn’s lunch special during Wellington on a Plate sounds delicious:

Of course they also have a regular menu as well, and offer a grand High Tea every day as well between 10am-5pm. Jolly good!
So, in order to win the $100 voucher, we want to know: what have you initally overlooked in Wellington that turned out to be great? Leave us a comment before 5pm next Wednesday to be in to win when we’ll draw one person at random.
A friend dragged me to Motel one night, after I kept moaning about there being no decent places just to got for a nice quiet drink without loud music, screaming girls and lolly water cocktails.
I used to walk past Sweet Mothers Kitchen for ages before I went there. After going once I was blown away by their delicious foody goodness.
Definitely overlooked Chicago – but they’re Wednesday quiz is so easy to win with the small amount of teams – Actually delicious pub food as well!
Definitely Munchen Burger on Cuba. It looks like the grottiest place of all time but Steve Logan told me to go and say hello so I did – the owners are the most awesome Ukrainian couple who came to Cuba Street 28 years ago and have never been back. Have the borscht. It is so cheap and so good. Makes me smile every time.
Kazu for me. I am famously hard to please when it comes to Japanese food having lived in Fukuoka – the self-appointed food capital of Japan. But I was pleasantly surprised that Kazu (Tory St.) managed to offer an authentic and delicious range of Japanese food at fair prices. We still don’t come close to competing with Christchurch where the abundance and quality of Japanese food is excellent, but Kazu is a good start in what is otherwise a sea of fairly uninspiring almost-Japanese fare.

Oh, sorry! The submission page wasn’t confirming so I reposted a couple of times. Please remove the extras (unless they are bonus winning chances!)…
What did I overlook when I first moved here two years ago? Left Bank, because I couldn’t find it! It’s surprisingly easy to be distracted by the bucket fountain, the buskers, the hipsters, and miss out on Satay Kingdom, Freakspeak, and the former (and, I think, better) home of Paper Bag Princess.
I lived at Greta Point for 3 years before I finally went to Soi (it’s not even 3 driveways away from my house!). What better place to sit on the edge of the deck, enjoy a glass of wine and watch the water, yachts, planes coming in and taking off, people out walking and running with their dogs, kayakers – just activity everywhere. Love it. Friday night regular now!
The Apartment – thought ‘oh no not another new bar that won’t last long’ and then was very very quickly convinced otherwise. Awesome space, awesome owners, great vibe.
“The Black Harp” on Featherston St has a great vibe, lovely food, a good quiz and is a really great place to watch sports on a Saturday night since it’s so far from the boofhead factor on Courtenay Place. Highly recommended – sad it took me so long to find it!
Hashigo Zake. Lurking under Zibibbo, it does look a little seedy and backstreety, but it has the best beers and a great, knowledgeable bar staff. It has an odd shape, not especially comfortable seating, but it has a real good feel to it.
Every now and then I’d hear someone mention ‘Miss Wong’ in conversation. Sometimes I would overhear strangers mention this ambigious ‘thing’. I dismissed it as being a dodgy takeaway place, perhaps in Aro. Who knew? I sure didn’t.
A couple of years pass by, I’m down College Street visiting Cafe L’affare when I spot a shop sign with the name ‘Miss Wong’ (Lightbulb!) I crossed the road to discover Wellington’s best kept unisex boutique secret! I could spend hours in there, everything from shoes, clothes, jewellery & more.
Miss Wong is a hidden gem!
Catch Sushi – I found the idea of conveyor belt sushi a bit daunting before I actually tried it. Glad I did, since the food is delicious and it’s fun too!
Also Motel for me. I was having a drink at Chow with my boyfriend of the time and the waiter came up and said “I have good news and bad news. The bad news is we’re closing but the good news is you can go through that door to another bar.” It was like crossing over into Narnia, and they let us take our wines through! It’s now one of my most favourite bars in Wellington, even more so when they started serving popcorn as a bar snack!
Artcraft Bakery. It just looked like a very boring old school bakery. Lots of people told me how amazing it was and I went in. The food is excellent, delicious, well made and super cheap!
The long queues at lunch time are because of a reason!
Defs offbeats down left bank arcade – best tofu burgers!
One place I previously overlooked was “Aunty Mena’s Vegetarian Cafe” on Cuba Street.
It looks a bit run down and me and my friends would always just go next door. It took a bit of convincing to eat there but I’m really glad we did!
They have the best roti chanai. And their roti chanai isn’t greasy/oily like other places I have been. The chanai is more of a “gravy” texture rather than water with oil floating on top.
Also the people who own it are very friendly and helpful. The food is really good and fresh. I would recommend going there.
Agreed!!! Yum!
California Sushi down left bank. Delicious. The lady in there is always so happy and chatty.
