Movies love to show nightclubs as glamorous places with dancefloors heaving with ridiculously good-looking people, all wearing the most amazing outfits – but that had never been my experience. Not until I went to Coven: Slumber earlier this year, that is.

Ivy was filled with Sapphics, and the vibes could not have been more immaculate. Elder queers played board games in the corner, while massages were available on stage. The music was non-stop bops (and yes, there was a lot of Chappell and Charli) and everyone had made an effort with their outfits – babes of all sizes wearing PJs or lingerie or a mix of the two. Everyone was gassing each other up. Basking in the safe environment, I watched a fat friend of mine whip off her t-shirt on the dance floor to a chorus of approving cheers. IT WAS SOOOO GOOD. All too soon though, the clock struck midnight and the femme crowd dispersed as Ivy opened up to everyone.  Bops were replaced with generic EDM, the sound system was turned up so loud it went tinny. Had it all been just a magnificent dream?

But! We get to do it all again! Coven returns! This Saturday!

COVEN is a party for queer women and gender minorities.

Join us at Ivy Bar on August 31 for our space themed event URANUS: A Celestial Gathering

Bring your gal-pals, find your coven, and dance the night away as we take over Wellington’s premier LGBTQIA+ bar.

Tickets are on a “Pay as you wish” system, so you choose your koha contribution.

Whether you are a queer woman, sapphic, trans, gender queer or don’t fit the binary, this night is for you.

From 8pm hang out and chill in a safe space, catch up with and make new friends. Then at 10pm we turn up the volume!
