Wel­ling­ton’s land­mark Chocol­ate Fish Cafe is to close at the end of the year, hit by rising rent and coun­cil com­pli­ance costs.

So what can we do?

  • Shrug our shoulders and let it be
  • Vis­it before it goes
  • Hope Peter Jack­son and/or loc­al Weta-type buy it
  • Get involved in keep­ing it open*

For now all the Wel­ling­tonista can say is join up to the “Save the Chocol­ate Fish” Face­book group and keep par­ti­cip­at­ing. We’re sure that demon­stra­tions will be sched­uled closer to the dreaded clos­ure date with forced cof­fee-drink­ing, Numbered Stone ™ throw­ing and enraged movie star appear­ances.

* And yes, we all think they’re prob­ably mak­ing a for­tune and don’t need our help .. pos­sibly. But we love hav­ing such a cool place on our door­steps and don’t need that as an excuse to let it slip away into Wel­ling­ton legend.
