Candidates: Rex Nicholls for Lambton Ward
Candidate responses to our election questions are rolling in. First 25 words to an answer get posted. Check our 2013 Election coverage for all responses as they come in. Here is Rex Nicholls, WCC candidate for Lambton Ward.
1. What should be the city council’s role in helping homeless people and beggars?
Move the beggars on after explaining where they should go to get Social Welfare help. Homeless can be offered help; most won’t want it.
2. What would you do to make Wellington more cycle and pedestrian friendly?
It is OK as it is.
3. How do you think traffic flow to the hospital and airport should be improved?
Build the bypass and get the second tunnel asap
4. What are your views on the suggestion Wellington needs to be “more than just Weta and Government” – what do you think are Wellington’s strengths?
Of course it needs more. Mainly it needs an attitude that Wellington can progress and investors will build on that positive.
5. What will YOU do to get more investment, businesses, and business confidence in Wellington?
Make decisions sensibly and quickly, be positive about developments that will enhance Wellington and promote them.
6. What does Wellington need more of, and what does Wellington need less of?
It needs job creation to bring more people. It needs less whinging.
7. What would your city council provide for children and young people?
Pretty good already. ASB Arena great for them. Would support strongly the Marine Education Centre.
8. What steps would you take to encourage civic engagement?
A very difficult thing to do when couples are working hard and see little interest in local government. Getting more of them to actually vote…
9. Tell us about your personal earthquake plan / What’s unusual about your earthquake kit?
I loved watching our building (from fifth floor) moving in the earthquakes. The city survived well. We have a kit, but in a large shake…
10. Why should we vote for you?
I will bring business acumen and experience, sadly deficient at present, to the table. Will promote the loan/rate scheme to strengthen Cuba St
11. Where can we find out more about what you stand for?
Come to the several meetings, including at our CQ Hotel 10 September. See http://www.vote.co.nz/2013/
He doesn’t actually answer a single question.
“Been there, done that” pretty much sums up this retread, oops, candidate.
I’d have been interested in a follow-up question: if walking/cycling infrastructure is OK as it is, when was the last time he tried to cycle from, say, Island Bay to the CBD at rush hour? In fact, a general “when was the last time you were actually on a bicycle” would be great.
Hopefully Rex will come and answer your question – we’re totally happy for candidates to use this space to interact with the public more.
