Enamel — a literary magazine from Wellington

Enam­el is a small print mag­a­zine edit­ed by new Welling­ton­ian Emma Barnes. Its first issue con­tains work from writ­ers based in Welling­ton, oth­er places in New Zealand and all around the world. In this issue you’ll see writ­ing from: Johan­na Aitchi­son, recent Ran­dell Cot­tage writer in res­i­dence Jen­nifer Comp­ton, Miri­am Barr and Tim Jones as well as oth­er new and estab­lished writ­ers. It also includes art by artists from New Zealand, Aus­tralia and the U.S.A.

Large­ly an exper­i­ment in cre­at­ing a lit­er­ary mag­a­zine, Enam­el seeks to become an ongo­ing part of the lit­er­ary scene in New Zealand. Enam­el is print­ed each year in March. Sub­mis­sions are always open. Enam­el is espe­cial­ly open to exper­i­men­tal work but con­sid­ers any­thing. Newtown — it’s a bit festive

The New­town Fes­ti­val is hap­pen­ing again, and you can find out more about it on their offi­cial web­site.. I am per­son­al­ly most look­ing for­ward the New­town Fes­ti­val Street Fair on March 8 — just a warn­ing — it’ll shut down most roads in the area. I remem­ber last year I’d had a pret­ty hor­ri­ble expe­ri­ence hav­ing to be in the Viaduct in Auck­land, and then I flew home hun­gover, lay on my bed, and could hear my band — the Phoenix Foun­da­tion play­ing just down the road in my sub­urb. <3

Fundraising for Project Matauranga

Some of us Welling­ton­istas make no bones about that fact that we suf­fer from a vari­ety of men­tal ill­ness­es, which is why we’re always pleased to sup­port peo­ple who are work­ing to sup­port the Men­tal Health Foun­da­tion of New Zealand. So we were real­ly encour­aged when we heard from Pete Bar­ton:

I am cur­rent­ly run­ning  a com­mu­ni­ty project to raise aware­ness of depres­sion and men­tal ill­ness in New Zealand and I would like to pro­mote a char­i­ty movie night on Tues­day 10th March.

Lars and the Real Girl will be screened at the Para­mount Cin­e­ma, Court­ney Place at 6.00 pm. I have some great spot and raf­fle prizes to give away includ­ing a $600 inter­is­lander fer­ry vouch­er.

Tick­et price is $20.00 which enters tick­et hold­ers into spot prize draw to win an inter­is­lander vouch­er. There are a num­ber of oth­er great prizes to be won from Bun­nings, Shoe Clin­ic Welling­ton, Bike Barn Welling­ton, Read­ing Cin­e­mas, Ben Lind Mas­sage Ther­a­py and Karori Sanc­tu­ary.

Pro­ceeds from the evening will go direct­ly to the Men­tal Health Foun­da­tion of New Zealand.

You will of course remem­ber how last year the Phoenix Foun­da­tion’s gig in Frank Kitts Park was vot­ed Best Live Per­for­mance at the TAWAs? Well this year, the Star­ry Nights con­cert on Feb­ru­ary 19 (dur­ing Web­stock!) will fea­ture the mag­nif­i­cant Fur Patrol, and of course since Miss Rat­pony is such a fan, we have this gif as a gift for you:

The Welling­ton City Coun­cil would like to hear from you tonight. Like, seri­ous­ly. Accord­ing to their ads in the paper, they even want you to stop watch­ing Coro­na­tion Street long enough to call them up and tell them what you think about them. Or to be specif­i­cal­ly quot­ing their old news sto­ry (one of the things I would com­plain about first would be how hard it is to find cur­rent news on their site): 

Do you have views on the city’s future? Then call our hot­line, talk to the May­or or Coun­cil­lors and tell them what you think. Welling­ton City Coun­cil is run­ning the hot­line … 7.00pm to 9.00pm — phone (04) 801 4205) to can­vas views from res­i­dents about what they val­ue about the city, what lev­el ser­vices should be fund­ed and what ser­vices could be reduced.

As always, we have some sug­ges­tions:

1. Get the trol­ley bus­es run­ning more often because we val­ue them,
2. The ‘ser­vice’ of build­ing roads and bypass­es and fly­overs that we don’t actu­al­ly need can get scrapped. Or moved to Hamil­ton cos that city total­ly needs a bypass. 
3. How about along with the rub­bish col­lec­tion we think about hav­ing a green/compost col­lec­tion? It works in San Fran­cis­co…
