Enamel – a literary magazine from Wellington

Enamel is a small print magazine edited by new Wel­ling­to­ni­an Emma Barnes. Its first issue con­tains work from writers based in Wel­ling­ton, oth­er places in New Zea­l­and and all around the world. In this issue you’ll see writ­ing from: Johanna Aitchis­on, recent Ran­dell Cot­tage writer in res­id­ence Jen­nifer Compton, Miri­am Barr and Tim Jones as well as oth­er new and estab­lished writers. It also includes art by artists from New Zea­l­and, Aus­tralia and the U.S.A.

Largely an exper­i­ment in cre­at­ing a lit­er­ary magazine, Enamel seeks to become an ongo­ing part of the lit­er­ary scene in New Zea­l­and. Enamel is prin­ted each year in March. Sub­mis­sions are always open. Enamel is espe­cially open to exper­i­ment­al work but con­siders any­thing. Newtown – it’s a bit festive

The New­town Fest­iv­al is hap­pen­ing again, and you can find out more about it on their offi­cial web­site.. I am per­son­ally most look­ing for­ward the New­town Fest­iv­al Street Fair on March 8 – just a warn­ing – it’ll shut down most roads in the area. I remem­ber last year I’d had a pretty hor­rible exper­i­ence hav­ing to be in the Via­duct in Auck­land, and then I flew home hun­gov­er, lay on my bed, and could hear my band – the Phoenix Found­a­tion play­ing just down the road in my sub­urb. <3

Fundraising for Project Matauranga

Some of us Wel­ling­tonis­tas make no bones about that fact that we suf­fer from a vari­ety of men­tal ill­nesses, which is why we’re always pleased to sup­port people who are work­ing to sup­port the Men­tal Health Found­a­tion of New Zea­l­and. So we were really encour­aged when we heard from Pete Bar­ton:

I am cur­rently run­ning  a com­munity pro­ject to raise aware­ness of depres­sion and men­tal ill­ness in New Zea­l­and and I would like to pro­mote a char­ity movie night on Tues­day 10th March.

Lars and the Real Girl will be screened at the Para­mount Cinema, Court­ney Place at 6.00 pm. I have some great spot and raffle prizes to give away includ­ing a $600 inter­is­lander ferry vouch­er.

Tick­et price is $20.00 which enters tick­et hold­ers into spot prize draw to win an inter­is­lander vouch­er. There are a num­ber of oth­er great prizes to be won from Bun­nings, Shoe Clin­ic Wel­ling­ton, Bike Barn Wel­ling­ton, Read­ing Cinemas, Ben Lind Mas­sage Ther­apy and Karori Sanc­tu­ary.

Pro­ceeds from the even­ing will go dir­ectly to the Men­tal Health Found­a­tion of New Zea­l­and.

You will of course remem­ber how last year the Phoenix Found­a­tion’s gig in Frank Kitts Park was voted Best Live Per­form­ance at the TAWAs? Well this year, the Starry Nights con­cert on Feb­ru­ary 19 (dur­ing Web­stock!) will fea­ture the mag­ni­fic­ant Fur Patrol, and of course since Miss Rat­pony is such a fan, we have this gif as a gift for you:

The Wel­ling­ton City Coun­cil would like to hear from you tonight. Like, ser­i­ously. Accord­ing to their ads in the paper, they even want you to stop watch­ing Coron­a­tion Street long enough to call them up and tell them what you think about them. Or to be spe­cific­ally quot­ing their old news story (one of the things I would com­plain about first would be how hard it is to find cur­rent news on their site): 

Do you have views on the city’s future? Then call our hot­line, talk to the May­or or Coun­cil­lors and tell them what you think. Wel­ling­ton City Coun­cil is run­ning the hot­line … 7.00pm to 9.00pm – phone (04) 801 4205) to can­vas views from res­id­ents about what they value about the city, what level ser­vices should be fun­ded and what ser­vices could be reduced.

As always, we have some sug­ges­tions:

1. Get the trol­ley buses run­ning more often because we value them,
2. The ‘ser­vice’ of build­ing roads and bypasses and fly­overs that we don’t actu­ally need can get scrapped. Or moved to Hamilton cos that city totally needs a bypass. 
3. How about along with the rub­bish col­lec­tion we think about hav­ing a green/compost col­lec­tion? It works in San Fran­cisco…
