The Show Some Love Show is a variety fundraiser to raise money for Wellington Women’s Refuge and Te Whare Rokiroki Maori Women’s Refuge. It will feature some of NZ’s best musicians, comedians, dancers, and poets; including The Eastern, Alice Brine, James Nokise and Fanciforia Foxglove.

Domestic and intimate partner violence is one of NZ’s biggest problems. One in three NZ women, and an estimated one in eight NZ men experience psychological or physical abuse from their partners in their lifetime. On average 14 women, six men and 10 children are killed by a member of their family every year. Police are called to around 200 domestic violence situations a day – that’s one every seven minutes on average, and police estimate only 18% of domestic violence incidents are reported.

“There’s been so much talk about domestic and intimate partner violence in the news and on social media lately. When you look at the stats for NZ, I think it’s really easy to feel a bit discouraged. We have some of the worst in the world, and it’s easy to feel like there’s nothing you can do to help,” says Hadassah Grace, creator and producer of the show. “I think not wanting to feel like we’re poking our noses into other people’s business is part of the reason domestic violence is such a huge problem in New Zealand. We have a culture of privacy, but it’s also a culture of silence, which keep victims isolated, and stops the attackers getting rehabilitation, too.”

None of the people involved are taking producer’s or performer’s fees, and a lot of sponsors have come on board to ensure the costs of running the event are low, so that as much money as possible can be donated.
