Solace in the Wind - Max Patte

Submitted by Che Tibby on Monday, 18 Feb 2008.

Say hi to my new favourite statue.

Solace in the Wind

I edited out his privates.

PS. There's information about Max and the statue here. and more info about his time at Weta, here.

I don't know about you, but personally I'm glad Weta is bringing people like Max to wellington.

Hey now Hadyn, if it makes Che feel insecure, it's okay.

nah, it was bad enough that the photo is taken from an angle where the photographer could be "helping him out".

On the edge of the wharf behind Te Papa.

and there's the great thing.

he's on the waterfront. taking that snap is no easy task. you have to hold his hand, and lean backwards waaay out over the water.

after i took the snap a few people were copying.

I'd like to see a photo of that!

I bike past that guy every morning.

He's rusting fast. He started out a dark ochre red but he's flaky yellow now.

I am tempted every now and then to strip off and stand next to him...

But not a photo of that. :-)

It's so weird I walk near him every morning (the statue not Stephen) and I've never seen him.

I suppose every time I look at the marina I must be thinking it's a real person. I saw him this morning though

interestingly, the rust isn't actually coming off. it's just making him this fantastic saffron colour.

and if i spot a pale, skinnyish bloke with glasses standing on the wharf too, it'll hesitate before i call the fuzz.

I think rust only peels off when the iron has some kind of coating on it (like paint). Otherwise it will just become powder.

What's happened to the statue ?

Dunno, I went past this morning about 0830 and he was looking very wonky, and at lunch time he'd gone.

Hopefully removed to straighten him out, rather than having toppled into the sea!
