Urb­an Har­vest is a Wel­ling­ton-based com­pany that deliv­ers loc­ally grown pro­duce, meat and oth­er culin­ary delights. For the fest­ive sea­son, they’ve branched out into Christ­mas hampers, and have opened a pop-up shop in their Mt Vic­tor­ia headquar­ters (29 Hania St) for those who like to get up close with their yuletide nomz.

The Wel­ling­tonista were invited along to the launch at the shop, com­plete with food by Al Brown and chef Hay­den Scott. Both Al Brown and Urb­an Har­vest cre­at­or Jo Free­man spoke enthu­si­ast­ic­ally about their love of fresh, sea­son­al food.

I was par­tic­u­larly taken by one of the hamper items – pop­corn on the cob. It was the instant sight of see­ing the famil­i­ar dried pop­corn ker­nels still on a cob of corn that made me real­ise that, yeah, it comes from a plant, not the heat-lamp bin at a movie theatre.
