The Show Some Love Show is a vari­ety fundrais­er to raise mon­ey for Welling­ton Women’s Refuge and Te Whare Rokiro­ki Maori Wom­en’s Refuge. It will fea­ture some of NZ’s best musi­cians, come­di­ans, dancers, and poets; includ­ing The East­ern, Alice Brine, James Nokise and Fan­ci­fo­ria Fox­glove.

Domes­tic and inti­mate part­ner vio­lence is one of NZ’s biggest prob­lems. One in three NZ women, and an esti­mat­ed one in eight NZ men expe­ri­ence psy­cho­log­i­cal or phys­i­cal abuse from their part­ners in their life­time. On aver­age 14 women, six men and 10 chil­dren are killed by a mem­ber of their fam­i­ly every year. Police are called to around 200 domes­tic vio­lence sit­u­a­tions a day – that’s one every sev­en min­utes on aver­age, and police esti­mate only 18% of domes­tic vio­lence inci­dents are report­ed.

“There’s been so much talk about domes­tic and inti­mate part­ner vio­lence in the news and on social media late­ly. When you look at the stats for NZ, I think it’s real­ly easy to feel a bit dis­cour­aged. We have some of the worst in the world, and it’s easy to feel like there’s noth­ing you can do to help,” says Hadas­sah Grace, cre­ator and pro­duc­er of the show. “I think not want­i­ng to feel like we’re pok­ing our noses into oth­er people’s busi­ness is part of the rea­son domes­tic vio­lence is such a huge prob­lem in New Zealand. We have a cul­ture of pri­va­cy, but it’s also a cul­ture of silence, which keep vic­tims iso­lat­ed, and stops the attack­ers get­ting reha­bil­i­ta­tion, too.”

None of the peo­ple involved are tak­ing producer’s or performer’s fees, and a lot of spon­sors have come on board to ensure the costs of run­ning the event are low, so that as much mon­ey as pos­si­ble can be donat­ed.
