The Show Some Love Show is a vari­ety fun­draiser to raise money for Wel­ling­ton Women’s Refuge and Te Whare Rokiroki Maori Women’s Refuge. It will fea­ture some of NZ’s best musi­cians, comedi­ans, dan­cers, and poets; includ­ing The East­ern, Alice Brine, James Nokise and Fanci­for­ia Fox­glove.

Domest­ic and intim­ate part­ner viol­ence is one of NZ’s biggest prob­lems. One in three NZ women, and an estim­ated one in eight NZ men exper­i­ence psy­cho­lo­gic­al or phys­ic­al abuse from their part­ners in their life­time. On aver­age 14 women, six men and 10 chil­dren are killed by a mem­ber of their fam­ily every year. Police are called to around 200 domest­ic viol­ence situ­ations a day – that’s one every sev­en minutes on aver­age, and police estim­ate only 18% of domest­ic viol­ence incid­ents are repor­ted.

“There’s been so much talk about domest­ic and intim­ate part­ner viol­ence in the news and on social media lately. When you look at the stats for NZ, I think it’s really easy to feel a bit dis­cour­aged. We have some of the worst in the world, and it’s easy to feel like there’s noth­ing you can do to help,” says Hadassah Grace, cre­at­or and pro­du­cer of the show. “I think not want­ing to feel like we’re pok­ing our noses into oth­er people’s busi­ness is part of the reas­on domest­ic viol­ence is such a huge prob­lem in New Zea­l­and. We have a cul­ture of pri­vacy, but it’s also a cul­ture of silence, which keep vic­tims isol­ated, and stops the attack­ers get­ting rehab­il­it­a­tion, too.”

None of the people involved are tak­ing producer’s or performer’s fees, and a lot of spon­sors have come on board to ensure the costs of run­ning the event are low, so that as much money as pos­sible can be donated.
