Maranui we miss you already
Shortly before 1am last night fire engines headed out to Lyall Bay trying to save Maranui Surf Lifesaving club and Maranui Cafe.
At the moment it doesn’t look so good.
I will miss their milkshakes most.

Old Maranui now has a cafe inside
Her bright red doors are opened up wide
Seven days a week our life savers make
A sumptuous selection of Wellington’s finest cake
There is no question we are certain to say
The Maranui Cafe makes the best coffee in the bay
And served to you by Matt and his team
Of friendly surf staff and baristas supreme
So put on your shoes or jump on your bike
And be sure to bring along someone you like
We always like to see somebody new
And don’t forget to sign the member’s book too

does their insurance cover employee wages? just wondering.
Hopefully insurance will make it better than it ever was… and presuming its rebuilt heres hoping they sort out the acoustics, as Maranui had the worst acoustics of any cafe I’ve ever been to! Which meant if it was busy it was also unpleasantly loud…
We will miss our breakfasts in the cafe 🙁 Hopefully for not too long.
Glad to hear the life club photos survived relatively undamaged. Sounds like it would be a good time to archive the collection and copy them so the photographs are preserved.
Our thoughts go out to Matt and his crew.
Maranui is great cafe and we look forward to more of the same in the future.

Very important that Maranui be rebuilt — because of its unique coastal location the building will never be replaced if demolished. Save Maranui, restore Maranui.
Both fire scene pics are from me, I have more but cannot release them until cause of the fire is known and there are no court cases related to the incident.
From what i saw the building could be restored to it’s former glory.

Good News! The photo’s up the stairs are not lost. The glass in the frames are a little fire damaged but the photos themselves, fine.

Bigger picture of course — sure, a terrific cafe has been lost, but what about Maranui SLC itself?
The lifeguards are clubless and they have lost all(?) of their history — those photos up the stairs and in the cafe itself were part of what made the place so special.
The orange and date scones!! to die for! Loved visiting Maranui Cafe each time I was over from Perth.
Went to the L’affaire fundraiser on Sunday (all of the takings were donated to Maranui).
People really want to help and feel good about helping, there was a great feeling in the air. Lets hope the recession brings out more of this positive side to human nature.
Hi! I have one question: How is the climate in Wellington? Cold and chilly, or warm and cozy whith palmtrees? Just cureous, I heard New Zealand be very cold, is that true?
