Malthouse closes on 23rd December
Only to re-open next to the Sports Bar on Courtenay Place around mid-February.
It’ll be interesting to see if the middle management-types and general office dwellers that frequent the current Malthouse will make the Friday night trek down to Courtenay Place.
Having said that it’ll be mighty to have a place that serves good beer (and not the standard sugary s!@t available) in the heart of Wellington’s entertainment ‘quarter’.
And so, for all those that are, like myself, middle management-types — see you for one last drink on the balcony!
Well ladies and most excellent ex-regulars of the Malthouse, having been both a regular and employee ( there was a very thin line between as some from the legends board will agree !),it was sad to be there on the last night.Although, thanks to the power of cellular, Malthouse Members far flung around the world still managed to enjoy and embrace the final evening of sublime sophistication with a classic reinactment of the iconic ” Dance of the Flaming A***hole “, ( which Mr Mohammed captured in all its cultural and political perfection pictorially ). I’m not 100% sure about a lot of my life, but I know that not in a sad-arsed way, the Malthouse was an icon of Wellington, made entirely possible by the unusual combination of genuinely pleasant customers, cold beers, and staff like Tracey, Glen, Stu henious pog,Maree, Scottie, Andrea, Racheal, Sas, JudePrude, Murra, King Ari Dude, B, Jackie etc. Let the good times roll in the new site ( and don’t let No-mates the quazi-DJ know .)
Yes, Seam was a funny little place, and I couldn’t see how they’d get the equivalent of the Malthouse into the space. They seem to be creating an enormous smoking area at the front, and it looks like they may be trying to squeeze a mezzanine floor in behind, which would give them some of the floor area they need.
Have you all seen the ‘new’ Malthouse coming together at its new site? I thought it was a dingy wee bar before but they seem to have extended it quite a bit
Only an occasional visitor, but will miss the balcony just the same.
Over the next 4 years the block will become a dark wall — flats as tall at the former BNZ tower extending from next to the tower all the way over the ghost of the Malthouse. The artist’s rendering in the Dom when the project was publicised was severely cropped — you could only read about such details. Chews Lane will become a lane with a building over it. Charming.
Arrgghh — I didn’t know about this so better stake out the balcony for a few days starting tomorrow after our match against Post-It at Shed 6.
Somewhere I have one of their “keyrings”, although coincidentally I stopped going there just before they sent it to me & so I have never used it for whatever it was it was supposed to be used for.
