What’s your favourite song from Wellington?
It’s NZ Music Month once again, so we wanna know what your favourite song by a Wellington artist is. Leave us a comment! If you include a YouTube link, magical elves might even embed it for you.
To get the party started, here’s mine. Super useful around Daylight Savings.

Please note: this is not the place to have a discussion about whether or not NZ Music Month should even be a thing. Let’s just listen to some tunes, yo.
Might be a little dated, but some great views of the City…
Interestingly, the Netherworld Dancing Toys were from Dunedin and really proud of the fact, especially because they were purveyors of a more cheerful, less introspective sound than the typical Dunedin mopey-arse sound.
Where should I start? There are so many songs I love coming from Welly …
This is very very close to my heart:
“Harbour City you’re a friend of mine” that Rob Winch wrote for Radio Windy originally and has been re-recorded by Gina Mills is the greatest. It is now the theme song of the Breeze and captures the essence of this city.
Wanting to stab myself in the ears is the essence of Wellington?
Shameless self promotion aside. No, just, …. no.
I’m technologically challenged so no link, but HLAH would be my pick.
Here ya go…
Thank You!
Oh hell yes with the Head Like A Hole. “Crying Shame” is my favourite Welly tune.
Man, why didn’t I see this post earlier in the week.
Obligatory Top 5:
Crying Shame – HLAH
Gutterjoy – Letterbox Lambs
Exchange For Good – Marystaple
C’mon Hallelujah – Paselode
You Honeys – You Honeys
I like this video for it’s Wellington-ness …

I first heard Tommy Ill when he performed at Tiger Translate last year. I just stumbled into the back-to-front Opera House and saw this dope MC wearing a fuzzy animal thing on his head, throwing down from fresh rhymes mixed up with ’60s bubblegum pop, and I was like “Who is this guy?”
Back at home, I googled my arse off, and finally discovered it was Mr Tommy Ill, who is better known amongst my geek pals at The Guy Who Used To Have A Blog On Stuff. I did that he has the same sort of voice/face difference as the Rhythm Slave – nice boy face, grunty man voice.
Anyway, here’s “Come Home Mr. Ill”, a song that did some hard yards as my aural methamphetamine, picking me up when work was bringing me down last year.
Sorry, couldn’t resist 🙂
Bailter Space – Shine
Shoes This High – The Nose One
The Garbage and the Flowers – Love Comes Slowly Now
Black Boned Angel – Verdun
Little Bushman – Baby
Signer – Nord All Black Keys (live at Camp A Low Hum 2008)
Signer – Low Light Dreams
Vorn – Dance and Feel Dirty
More Vorn!
