Preview: The Loneliest Whale in the World
This isn’t a break up show. It’s about marine science.
So begins the blurb for this production coming up at Bats Theatre from July 10-14.
A play about whales seems to be very very timely for Wellington right now, but this one has been in the making for a long time.
“Four years ago, my friend Jean told me, “Hilary, no one is good enough for you”. Which sounded a lot like, “Hilary, you are destined to be alone forever”. But anyway, this show isn’t about me. It’s about a whale.
At around the same time, I found out about the 52-Hertz Whale; a hybrid fin/blue whale that emits a mating call at a frequency no other whale can hear. Whales rely on their songs to attract a mate so the theory goes that this whale is swimming around, calling out into an empty void for a mate who will never hear her. Long story short, this whale is basically doomed.”
Will the whale ever find love? Will Hilary?
Only one way to find out…
