Sax Pack – The Mack is Back

Remember this guy and all of those drums? (Incidentally, all of those drums will be turning Kora up loud this Friday).

Or perhaps you remember him as that crazy, sexy, cool guy playing vegetables at Fringe last year (winner Best Music and Best Solo Show at 2009 Fringe Festival).

Adam Page is back at Downstage this Sunday along with three more saxophonists, as the Adalaide Sax Pack, featuring some silky vocals from Welly’s Lisa Tomlins (Shapeshifter, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Rhombus, TrinityRoots).

Billed as:

4 world class Saxophonists, 1 HUGE quartet sound, stacks of the cheesiest music you know you love but choose to hate.

This girl is looking looking forward to the cheezy ’80s covers and being a vocal member of the raucous fun-time crowd.

Come along, it isn’t that expensive and will be downright festive (in a good way).

Details and a taster after the jump.

Montana winners

So recently we asked you where you would drink Montana’s new-label Sav Blanc, and you told us. The randomizer.org threw the numbers 2 and 8 at us, so congratulations to Cat and Marshall. If you could please send an email to johubris at gmail with your address, I’ll get your wine out to you. Cheers!

the 12 Pubs of Christmas

People say, sometimes with even a hint of concern in their voices, that we at the Wellingtonista are overly concerned with drinking.

And it’s true. We are very concerned. In fact we’re writing now to warn you about an upcoming event that may well involve some drinking. What’s worse, it’s the the sort of thing attended by the Boys Your Mother Warned You About and the Girls Your Father Snuck Looks At When He Thought Your Mother Wouldn’t See.

More exciting stuff to do with #T4WA

Holy crapsticks, there’s less than a week to go until the Fourth Annual Wellingtonista Awards! You already know, of course, that you need to vote before December 15, and that the doors to the Awards Ceremony open at 6.30pm on December 17 at Mighty Mighty. We’ve told you about the Klezmer Rebs who are playing, but we haven’t mentioned that there’ll be a secret musical interlude. And we also haven’t told you about the awesome spot prizes we have to give away on the night, so let’s do that now:

Tickets are just $10 on the door, and we can promise you that it will be a rollickingly good time, so you’re coming along, right?

Mixing it up at the Havana Club Cocktail Grand Prix

mojitoThose of you who follow us on Twitter might have noticed a reoccuring hash tag yesterday of "cockchamp".

This was, of course, us reporting live and on the sport from the New Zealand heat of the Havana Club Cocktail Grand Prix held at Betty’s. Ten of the best bartenders from around the country battled it out for the chance to represent NZ at the world wide finale in Havana next May.

You may already know that Clare Harlick from the Matterhorn won, but what went on at the competition and at the VIP after-party? Read on!

Montana gets fresh – and so can you

montana labelFrom the numbers of you lot voting for the Montana World of WearableArt awards in the TAWAs, we’re guessing that you’re already pretty familiar with Montana wines. After all, it’s been more than 30 years since Montana’s original 1979 vintage Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc introduced the distinctive flavours that established New Zealand’s reputation on the world wine stage. As part of the commemorative celebrations, Montana took the opportunity to freshen up the look of the brand. Always keen to get our hands on free wine, even if we have to pass it on, we have two triple packs to give away so you can see the new look for yourself.

With the compliments of the lovely people at Montana and us adorable Wellingtonistas, you can enter the draw for a chance to win one of two Montana prize packs valued at $50 each. The prize pack includes three bottles of the new look Montana Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2009

In order to get into the draw, all you gotta do is leave us a comment and tell us where you’re going to drink the wine. Are you going to take them to your favourite Malaysian BYO place, or drink them (carefully!) at the top of the secret tree in the Bot Gardens? Tell us before December 15 (which is also the cut-off date for voting in the Wellingtonista Awards, don’t forget!) and we’ll choose two winners at random. And now for the legal stuff: you need to be over 18 to enter this competition. We will be checking IDs because we definitely learnt our lesson with that one guy we met on Courtenay Place that one time.

Kaldenbach:Exhibition

Just a quick note about an exhibition tonight (Tuesday December 8th). Colin Kaldenbach – gig poster designer extraordinaire – exhibits the best of his work from 2009 at SFBH, with a live set from Wellington’s Kittentank.

Showcasing posters featuring bands such as Flipper, Sons of Midas, Gaywyre, The Postures, The Verlaines, Kittentank, New Telepathics, Newtown Street Justice and more . Prints, framed work and canvas are available for purchase. It’s free and there will be happy hour pricing all night. It kicks off at 6pm.

So if there’s a gig poster that has taken your fancy this year, you can either pick up a cheap good quality print or go the whole hog and get a framed piece. There is some original one off work for sale as well. The exhibition will run for two days only, so get in there! You can view some of the posters available here

An Adagio Christmas

PhotobucketThere’s a moment very early on in An Adagio Christmas when the whole theatre gasped in unison, and both our daughters stood up in shock. The moment passed, the shock faded, but they never quite settled back past the edges of their seats. Like the rest of us, from then on they were hooked.

An Adagio Christmas is a retuned-for-Christmas version of the earlier Downstage production of the same name; a series of loosely linked vignettes whose performances encompass various circus skills as well as music, singing, dancing, and comedy.
