What's in a name #1

Submitted by noizyboy on Thu, 2007-03-22 10:42.

So, perhaps the most drawn out sports decision ever to be made by an Australasian sporting body has finally been confirmed, and a Wellington bid has won the right field a team in Australia's A-League soccer competition.

Now all they need is a name (oh, and some players, and a home ground, but let's not mention that).

So, what do we think. What's a good name for our local professional football team. The guys over at the A-League discussion forums have come up with some suggestions...

  • Wellington Wizards
  • Wellington Wonders
  • Wellington Wanderers

...but, you know, that whole sports team alliteration thing is a bit passé. There's some support for just continuing the Knights (noooo!), and, likewise, for a good old fashioned appendage like United, FC, or City. Today's DomPost had these suggestions...

  • Wellington Thunder
  • Wellington Fever
  • Wellington Hornets
  • Wellington Blast

...of which Hornets doesn't ring too bad, although, do we have hornets in Wellington? Surely the Wellington Killer Bees would be more appropriate? And despite the enthusiasm of the supporters on the back page of the DomPost today, I don't think 'Fever' is the best idea in the world - the rich potential for headline puns when things go horribly wrong is just too much to consider.

Any other thoughts?

LOL!

That one headed me off at the pass & I no longer have anything useful to add to this thread.

ROFL!

that one pretty much sealed it for me.

i was going to go for 'the pauas', because they'll be nothing but defence...

Any fauna/chromatic tie-ins (e.g. yellow/black bees/wasps etc.) should automatically be discounted for being naff. Ugh to all the forum bods' suggestions. Ugh to all the Dom Post's suggestions. "Killer Bees" - sorry ugh too, though I guess at least if you called 'em the "Killa Beez" you could get the Wu-Tang clan to do a team song.

Having rained all over everyone else's parades, however, I don't have much to add. Except some auto-associative things that came to mind:

Wellington Into the Winds
Wellington Galeforce Southerlies
Wellington Wind-chill Factors
Wellington Grounds Closeds
Wellington 60 Knot Cross-Winds

etc.

Something that suggests being stuck in traffic & missing the game?

The Wellington Jam

Given the team's owner, how about the Wellington Wideboys?

noizyboy's picture

heh.

WTF! how come everyone on this comment thread but me has "user" attached to their name!

i demand an enquiry!!

llew's picture

Can't see "user" anywhere, but it says "unverified" after your name - are you logged in?

Because everyone know your reputation.

are you calling me an user or an unverifier?

How about the Wellington Aucklanders
or the Wellington Refugees
or the Wellington Millionaires Club
or the Wellington Mortgages

or lets try to scare (one way or another) the opposition by being the Wellington Brazilians

It should be HEADLINE friendly to help the hapless hacks at the DomPost think they're being witty...

As an example. We could try Welllington Mules. You can see it now "Mules prove stubborn". Guffaw...

Given the last NZ franchise perhaps we should go for names relating to natural disasters:

Wellington Earthquakes
Wellington Cyclones (more hemisphere specific to Wellington)
etc etc

But I've always liked Maori/Polynesian names:

Wellington Taiaha
Wellington Moai

Or what about the failed league team's name?

Wellington Orca

Sheesh, if you're going to go with natural disasters, why not choose something topical like The Wellington Lahars.

Which to be honest is totally naff like pretty much every other nickname for a sporting team in New Zealand.

How about the Wellington Fault Line? That way if we don't win, no one has to take the blame...

Was thinking that maybe Underdogs was has something about it...?

Doesn't look so bad in a headline.

Underdogs win.
Underdogs win league
Underdogs lose again.

I'll be quiet now….

Go local, thus, black uniforms, and hence...

Wellington Black.

Team slogan....

None More Black.

Wellington Black sounds a bit weird, so take a leaf from Red Star Belgrade, and go Black Star Wellington FTW!

noizyboy's picture

nice. much more sensible.

Long blacks? Short blacks?

noizyboy's picture

long blacks at the back, short blacks up front.

just like the brazilian football team.

Southerlies?

"Southerlies blow out opposition"

"Southerlies chill Melbourne"

etc etc

frost?

"frost descends on sydney"
"frost all over the pitch"

noizyboy's picture

heh. "frosties whip out of the hat for a win"!

Hadyn's picture

Hmmmm, well there was the BlackCocks last year...maybe the BlackBalls?

I like -

Wellington WhiteSOX.

However I did just find out thats the name of the softball team

Thanks for your mention of us ;)

If the rumour is correct that we are called 'The Bees' I will be very, very dissapointment. I can see the link with the beehive but its not a name that strikes fear, and in my opinon puts the franchise on the back foot already.

Who wouldd you like to play, Queensland ROAR or Wellington BEES.

If its FC Wellington with the nickname the Bees, that will be a lot better.

Southerlies
Kinetics
Caffeinds

ooh, just saw Alan said Southerlies, gets my vote. Southerlies prevail!

Isn't it obvious?

The "Wellington Boots".

genius

I like Wellington Phoenix- the bid really did rise from the ashes!

Or New Zealand Peasants, get it Kinz to Knights to Peasants.

Or in the style of Melbourne Victory, how about Wellingon Losers. (not that I am lacking confidnce in the team's ability to win games or anything.)

Wellington City!

i love the wellington boots! that is so wry. even if they do wear soccer shoes, not boots - they boot the ball around, & stuff. so there. guess it's too late huh?!
