K Records documentary & Mirah at Happy
A double dose from the influential and inspiring K Records out of Olympia, Washington. On Wednesday you get a chance to ‘bone up’ on this legendary label thanks to a screening of the 1999 doco: THE SHIELD AROUND THE K: THE STORY OF K RECORDS and on Thursday Mirah (one of K record’s brightest stars) is performing.
The (free) film kicks off on Wednesday at 8pm sharp and profiles the birth and growth of the DIY label whose lo-fi credibility has never been compromised. I’ll let The Jeffery Lewis Band provide a musical synopsis.
Mirah is at once an innovator and a heart-on-sleeve artist whose spectrum runs from folk to disco, with a decade long discography as varied as the colours of a Double Rainbow. Playing Wellington on Thursday with multi-instrumentalist Dave Depper (Norfolk & Western, Jolie Holland) and Rachel Blumberg, who has drummed for The Decemberists, Bright Eyes and M. Ward. We have a double pass to give away – to the first person to name the 2 co – founders of K Records in the comments below.
The two co-founders are John Foster and Calvin Johnson.
Hmmmm, so close! Anyone else want a shot?
Can I win a prize for noticing you probably mean Olympia, Washington rather than Washington DC ?
Oh, and I know it’s Calvin Johnson, but I don’t know who else! Phil Elvrum?
Nice spotting there, Nicole…
If no one gets the 2 founders right the tickets are all yours!
ok, now that I’ve seen the documentary, I know it’s Calvin Johnson & Candice Pedersen.
Congrats, Nicole! 2 names on the door.
Noooooo!!!! I just noticed this now! I love Mirah. Shit!
Although I totally should visit the site more often than weekly, could I suggest more than 24 hrs notice on events? Cheers.
Hooray! Thanks Wellingtonista!!!!
