Short Ends:

  • I got too hungover from the Occidental’s terrible host responsibility (handing out free drink tickets for mugs and jugs that needed to be drunk that night) busy to post about this last week, but Team Quizingtonista won the Wellingtonista Quiz League. Woo ha! Points must also go to ClickSuite for being the only other team to show up every week. Although I suppose Jeffrey from Xero had other things on his mind.

  • Modern Love in the Left Bank is closing down cos Helen’s moving to Melbourne. Get your ass in there ASAP to get discounts of 50-70% off everything.

  • What two things can you find on pretty much every corner of Wellington? Wishbone outlets and government employees getting their lunch there, of course. So why do must Wishbone use a #5 plastic container for most of their foods when govt3* recycling stations will only accept #1-3 plastic? Apparently you can take your empty #5s to Commonsense Organics and they’ll recycle them for you, but that seems like an awfully large commitment to make.

*govt3 is a scheme whereby government employees have their rubbish bins taken away and replaced with a cube the size of a coffee mug, so they’re forced to sort their rubbish into compost, recyclables and landfill waste. It’s a great idea but it’s very very annoying how hard it seems to be for slightly older generations to adapt to it. If it gets put in place in your workplace, stay out of the kitchen for a couple of months or get earplugs because OH MY GOD how hard can it possibly be and is it really worth the hours and hours of complaining and not understanding what to put where? No!

  • Entertainment Book Review: One Red Dog

At the Wellingtonista we don’t often give props to less consciously hipster places like One Red Dog, even though their continued success shows they have a devoted following. Today we discovered one of the reasons why this devoted following might exist.

    Review after the jump.

    Free Speech and Freebies

Plenty of people use the comments facility on blogs like this one (and that one) as a discussion forum, but unless you’re actually one of the blog writers you can’t start your own threads. But the Texture public forum allows anyone to start their own thread (as long as they’re signed up). Texture concentrates on nightlife, music, art & dining, but comments on anything about Wellington that you like (such as Thai food) or loathe (such as tagging) are most welcome.

They’re also starting to give away lots of free stuff, from tickets to Little Bushman or the Alternative Rugby Commentary to Floriditas vouchers. It’s all a shameless ploy to get people involved in the forums, of course, but then again … free stuff!

    Entertainment Book review: Medina

MedinaOnce again, I had left my book at home somewhere, so it was another gold card restaurant that was needed. Since my other sister decided to gatecrash our party, a total discount venue, rather than a two-for-one mains was desireable. And because it was cold and I was lazy and didn’t feel like walking anywhere, somewhere on the bus route home was needed – preferably somewhere that I could get a big plate of heartiness at. Medina was decided upon, as it seems to have beaten the curse that made other restaurants in its location at 18 Cambridge Terrace close down very rapidly. The review is after the jump.

A Friday night and a Saturday morning

Down at the City Gallery on Friday night they are running another one of their Late Night Sessions, where you get to cruise around the big exhibition (this time it’s the biennial Prospect show) in relative peace and listen to lovely live music while you do so. And all for free.

City Gallery’s popular late night Friday returns. Wander through Telecom Prospect 2007: New Art New Zealand to a backdrop of independent and electronic sounds by local performers. Featuring Peneloping, Tc Wedde with Luke Buda, and Aspen.

The lovely Luke Buda is of course in The Phoenix Foundation, as is (the equally lovely) Tc Wedde. Aspen is also lovely and also known as Signer, and is one half of Over the Atlantic and one half of Skallander. And the "medium-core girl-boy plinkpop!" Peneloping also have a very good reputation as a live act. Having experienced Late Night Sessions many times before – from the point of view both of a performer and a patron – I can heartily recommend this event.

    Wellingtonista Awards 2006: the results

some of the prizes were AWESOME!
    Drumroll, please!

(Almost) Live, from Mighty Mighty, we relay to you the results of the First Annual Wellingtonista Awards for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence!

Compered (and commentary) by Wellingtonista’s own Jo Hubris!

    1. When I am not having a martini, I like to drink a:
There were clearly only two real contenders for this award, although various stay-at-home type people thought that their write-in results were more worthy. Perhaps it wasn’t clear enough that the category was basically “best cocktail” as people nominated venues without a specific drink. In the end, it came down to a one point difference. The runner-up was a Falling Water at the Matterhorn,
And the winner is: a caipirinha at Havana.

    2. I spent all my rent money on dinner here, but at least when the bailiffs beat me to death I will die blissfully:
If the Wellingtonista ever goes in pursuit of the almighty advertising dollar, we probably don’t want to let on what some of our readers rated as an expensive eating experience. In the end, the result wasn’t too surprising. The runner-up was Francois,
And the winner is Logan Brown.

    3. I found $20 in my flatmate’s room, so it’ll be dinner at:
People who nominated their favourite Malaysian restaurants got counted as a vote for Malaysian anywhere, because there are so damn many Malaysian places in town. Not that we’re complaining about that. The runner-up, Sweet Mother’s Kitchen had a good showing, but in the end was obviously defeated by those damn Asian criminals that Deborah Coddington believes are invading New Zealand.
And the winner is Malaysian anywhere.

    Harem Scarum

Because she is obsessed with Elvis, and also maybe due to some experiences on tour buses that she alludes to but never puts her photos on flickr from, our intrepid publisher decided to treat us all from the Wellingtonista towers to lunch at Harem to celebrate the launch of the new URL.

    Bus(t) a move

So, as part of the big shiny Metlink rebranding, they’re going to change zones and prices, and they’d like you to have a say. Wondering what this means and how it might affect you? Well, if you’re under 18 or over 65, you might get 50% off your fares, provided you show a photo ID. […]
