Vic Books sale

On a stunning day like today, what could be a better way to use your lunch hour than taking the cable car up the hill to Victoria University and checking out the sale at Vic Books? With books starting at 50 cents, this is how I keep my bookshelves overloaded.

There’s only a week and a half more to go, but new stock is constantly added, there’s 25% off fiction not already reduced on 17th May; and 25% off non-fiction not already reduced on the 24th. The sale finishes Friday 25th May and the shop’s open daily from 8am-6pm. Oh, and due to a terrible mishap with suppliers, they have 100 copies of Ann Coulter’s Slander for 50 cents each, which is perfect if you’re in the mood for a good old-fashioned book burning to warm the autumn nights. Hurrah!

WBL: Results round three

Oooh! Things are really getting exciting now.

Former league champions Xero took on Clemenger last night and didn’t come out victorious.

Meanwhile the random point awarded for most gutter balls (chosen by Silverstripe as last week’s random point winners) allowed the Bowlingtonista to give up last place to ClickSuite – although if I could repeat my hilarious joke about there being no ‘I’ in ‘Wellngtonsta Bowlng League’, ClickSuite did once again have the highest scoring individual player. Ryan managed to beat Clemenger’s Dr. Broad for that title even though Dr Broad got four strikes in a row, and ClickSuite are no doubt weighed down by their ridiculous facial hair that they’re growing for Maystache.

And while Bowltron had promised to form into one mighty lion if their score went over 500, unfortunately that just didn’t come to pass. They still creamed us though, even despite our attempts at distraction with clever rhyming chants. League table and individual points after the jump.

A close shave

Anyone forget to shave this morning might be interested in heading down to Lambton Quay near the Old Bank Arcade, where a caravan set up like a barbershop is waiting for you. It appears to be a promotion for a particular kind of new men’s razor, but I’m sure they’d be happy to shave ladies too…

WBL Round 2: The results

Your fortnight in coffee

Fairtrade Fortnight started yesterday, so I’m sure you’re keen to do your bit to make the world a better place. The Wellingtonista would, therefore, like you to help us do a little research.

There are a lot of coffee companies in Wellington who now offer fairtrade beans. We want you to get drinking and tell us what the best ones are. You can use the fairtrade locator to start your search, but it may be a little out of date – there is no Malo Cafe anymore, for example – so it might be best if you ask your favourite cafes if they have fairtrade beans – and if they don’t, ask them why the hell they don’t. Go forth and caffinate!

What up, weekend? 27 April edition

So, what to do over the next couple of days? Do like we do, and do these things:

  • Get your fancy pants on, and head along to the Madame Fancy Pants new store opening tonight at 217 Cuba St.
  • I’m sure you know by now how we feel about anything even vaguely Tiki-related, so naturally Voodoo Mambo at Mighty Mighty ranks highly on our must-do list.
  • Or, if you’re after something more traditional, why not check out the Maori Market 2007 at the TSB Bank Area? it promises to feature

…paintings, weaving, sculpture, wood, silver, bone, gold, and greenstone carving, clay, Ta Moko or traditional tattoo with items ranging in price from $500 to $80,000.

  • How about an immersive environment of light and sound? That’d be Looklessness and it’s on at the Film Archive. Saturday night sees a “live performance by the artists entitled Light-mantled Sooty Albatross. People are invited to view live in action “the mutli-projector analogue delights: spliced and bubbling marmite collage, eye-bending glass light, and bleached, honeyed sprocket-holes.”
  • Or, if you prefer your birds to rise frm the flames, there is, of course the Phoenix Foundation playing at San Frindigo on Saturday night.

When the lines go down

I’m sure you know that the Wellingtonista is a big fan of the trolley buses, and thinks that everyone who bitches about the wires overhead being an eyesore is an idiot. You probably think that it’s because we’re dirty leftie greenies that we’re fond of the wires, but the truth is, we like them because it’s hilarious when they go down. Like this morning, watching a trolley-bus having to get shunted by another bus out of a major Hataitai intersection. And getting to ride on the other side of Courtenay Place around marooned buses. And seeing Willis St totally blocked up with the corpses of trolley buses left lifeless. Actually it was lovely to see how friendly all the traffic was, and how quickly police and other people in shiny coats were there to direct traffic and keep things running. Sometimes Wellington is a surprisingly well-oiled machine. The official word after the jump:

WBL Round 1: the results

The Wellingtonista Bowling League Draw

It gives us tremendous pleasure to announce the draw of our Bowling League. Brave (but foolish for thinking they could possibly beat us) teams from Xero, Silverstripe, Click Suite, Clemenger BBDO and the fantastically named Bowltron will be taking part and therefore get massive karma points.

SEE THE FULL DRAW HERE.

Round 1 will be Tuesday 24th at 8pm at The Lanes on Wakefield St.

The rules on the night are as follows:

  • If at the end of the game your team’s sum total (total of all four players) is higher than your opposition’s then you get four competition points.
  • If your team consumes more than four alcoholic beverages (or averages more than one per player) you get a bonus competition point
  • The team with the highest sum total on the night gets an extra bonus point.

So if you booze up and roll like a god your team could come away with 6 points.

Expect to see many people at Clemenger crying on Wednesday morning after the Bowlingtonista give them the thrashing of their lives. Hurrah!
