Overheard on the Cable Car

On this very wet, rainy afternoon… Young Woman 1: “Wotcha been up to?” Young Woman 2: “Working” … Young Woman 2: “Wotcha been up to?” Young Woman 1: “Shopping at the Kirk’s Sale.” … Young Woman 2: “Wotcha buy?” Young Woman 1: “Knickers.” … Young Woman 2: “And an umbrella.” (Unwraps umbrella to show it) […]

Sale Time at Kirkcaldie & Stains!!

A Wellington institution, the Kirk’s Sale. OK, it started Monday, but that doesn’t matter. Now is the time to go. By now, the shoppers are a little less extreme than the 1. Rabid, and 2. Catatonic zombie that they ranged between on Monday morning. Still plenty of bargains to be had. The sale ends on […]

Mark Blumsky, ex-Wellington Mayor and now National Party candidate for Wellington Central, gets beaten up during the weekend. Sir Humphrey’s point out that self-professed left-wing nutter Millsy last week expressed his desire to see right-wing ‘blood on the streets’ last week. Any connection? Lots of comment over at David Farrar’s blog as well. MiramarMike reports […]

Newtown: home to more than medical treatments

Newtown: more than medical treatment

Five Other Things to do in Newtown:

A post had been planned about how you might like to take a tour around the fabulous architecture of Wellington Hospital, and suggesting that the best way to take such a tour is while lying zonked out on great drugs on a hospital bed, being pushed by a security guard, but as being sick is so last month, here are better things you should do in Newtown instead:

1. Go to the Zoo. You could even touch the red pandas if you’re particularly lucky.
2. Go eat a mountain of fries at Malo. $5.50 buys a very very large bowl of thick crisp chips and great garlic mayo. Make sure to share them or you won’t be able to walk afterwards. Wellingtonista has also had many happy Singaporean dinners at Chumeez, and adores the duck pancakes at Beijing Restaurant.
3. Buy Thai Red Bull from the Asian section of the small cramped New World. Mmmm syrupy. (Wellingtonista recommends it as a good base for Punch, particularly when mixed with soda, cranberry juice, vodka and blue curacao).
4. Check out some hot young talent before they end up on Shortland Street in a show at Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School.
5. Go celebrity spotting. According to the Wellington City Libraries, noted celebrities who live in Newtown include Emma Paki — and also Miss Natalie Biz of course.

What’s there to do in your suburb?

What I Did On My Holidays

School Holidays means a very quiet time around Wellingtonista Towers, as all but one of the regulars are fully-fledged card-carrying parents. And Jo won’t come in if there’s no-one to regale her stories of horrifying medical treatments and bowel-movements to. As well as looking after the kids, the homebound Wellingtonista have been taking some time […]

It’s Just Not Cricket

Former Zimbabwean cricketer Henry Olonga will speak at a public meeting in Wellington on Thursday. Olonga, along with fellow player Andy Flower, caused a stir at the 2003 Cricket World Cup by wearing black armbands during all his matches. Olonga fled his homeland shortly afterwards and now lives in London. The Green Party has brought […]

Backyard Theatre — Misconceptions

-Misconceptions- Strange images on the fax? A dead Okapi in Copenhagen zoo?? Abused blackberries from the freezer??? And Ratty from The Wind in the Willows???? Who the *#@* is Zoe????? Does she really have wings?????? For the answers see “Misconceptions” — David Lewis’ virtuoso comedy, by turns hilarious and heartbreaking, straight-talking and surreal. Matthew and […]

Wing! Leila! Live!

Wellingtonians are spoilt for choice when it comes to their foreign-born-but-now-kiwi female singing stars tonight, with two of the country’s most distinctive performers putting on shows around town. First up is the debut Wellington appearance of the world famous Wing at the Mercure Hotel on Willis Street. Wing, an expat Hong Kong resident who now […]

Think Big

The Wellington City Council is calling for new ideas for projects that could be funded by the Plimmer Bequest — a bequest for beautifying Wellington’s bays, beaches and reserves. The Oriental Bay Beach development was the last project to be funded by the bequest. Projects that would be considered include planting trees, water features, scenic […]
