Amnesty International are looking to recruit street performers to support human rights as part of Freedom Week 2006(their annual awareness and fundraising week 31 july – 6 august)
Money collected on the streets this year will support their crisis campaigning work, in particular their work to stop human rights abuses in Darfur, Sudan.
To help raise the profile of Freedom Week, and boost public donations, for the first time this year, they’re asking artists, buskers and performing arts students to give up half an hour or an hour of their time to busk on Freedom Day, their street appeal day. In Wellington that’s Thursday 3rd August.
This is an invite to dance for love in the street to support Amnesty International’s Freedom Day.
What: Freedom Day street performance with Wellington Batucada (for Amnesty International’s Freedom Week)
When: Thursday 3rd August, between 5 and 6pm
Where: Corner of Lambton Quay and Featherston St (in front of Old Bank Arcade)
Costumes: To be advised
Other: There will be no practices, so you will need to be confident in following carnival/samba reggae moves as lead by a teacher and freestyling as well.
Shake it for a good cause, or just go along and show your support.
Anyone would think I have some kind of vested interest in Craftwerk…
Anyhow, last minute reminder.
Tonight, the Paramount, 5.30-8.30.
Craft, booze, music and big screen Atari.
Hot baby.
You are invited to Wheeler’s Luck fundraising gala.
Come along and support the boys as they take on The Edinburgh Festival.
Two nights only, July 25th and 26th at 9pm Bats Theatre.
For bookings phone 802 4175, or email: book@bats.co.nz
The reviewers say:
“Hugely entertaining and quirkily Kiwi …two brilliantly talented comic actors create not only an entire community with over 400 locals, but also a dance routine, pub brawl, shipwreck and, dizzyingly, a bareback horse race… Energising, hilarious and perceptive, this beautifully honed show is pure theatrical magic” New Zealand Listener, 2006
“The whole story is told in 80 extraordinary minutes through 55 characters and a pet rock, all created with minimalist wit, great ingenuity and monumental talent by Toby Leach and Nigel Collins…. there is no one you don’t know, or know of, in this community.” National Business Review, 2005
“…gloriously performed …rivalling Ben Hur for excitement but much funnier …a sure fire hit.” Dominion Post, 2005
Only a week until Craftwerk hits the town.
Where: Paramount Theatre
When: Thursday 13th July, 5.30-8.30
What: Where to start? There will be a fabulous range of craft items created by oodles of clever people. From badges to crochet, from jewellery to a rather special range of children’s screenprinted shirts (bit of self promotion never hurt anyone eh?).
There will be music and Atari games, a fantastic mix tape swap, and all in a licensed venue.
Truly, does life get any sweeter?
Somehow this appeals to me. Maybe it’s a recollection of the Dilbert cartoon where you are exhorted to improve your life with stolen office stationary.
Maybe it’s because I once took out the power in a whole building in the CBD when a colleague’s electric stapler shorted on my documents.
Who knows…? But the call of the Office Products Expo is like a siren singing to me.
I am so there already.
Actually, now I think about it, it is the free stuff. I for one will be sporting a sizeable backpack, we haven’t bought any office products for the Wellingtonista Towers in the last 3 years…
OFFICEMAX SHARPEN UP
For the third year running in Wellington, Officemax hosts the office products expo of the year! Come on down to the Michael Fowler Centre and take a look at new releases in office products, furniture, technology, hygiene products and consumables.
Talk to the experts, catch the demonstrations and try products for yourself. There are fantastic free samples to collect and great prizes to be won.
WHERE: Renouf Foyer, Michael Fowler Centre,
WHEN: Wednesday 12 July
TIME: 10am – 3pm
The Pelorus Trust Fireshow kicks of at Petone Wharf at 7.30pm, Saturday July 1st.
I suggest locating yourself close to the western end of the Esplanade for the best view.
It is a great event to take children to, since it is so early, and all over and finished by 7.45pm.
Warming beverages recommended. In fact I can specifically recommend a thermos of mulled wine. Mmm, toasty.
The Young and Hungry 2006 season is about to get under way, with three plays produced and performed by ‘yoof’ starting their two week run down at Bats from this Friday night.
This year we’ve got How to Live in a World Full of Terrorists, Generator, and, winner of best title award, Butt Ugly, which also sounds like it has the most entertaining (if familiar) plot: “What happens when all the odd-ball freaks band together and set out for revenge?”
The Y&H plays are always good fun, and have spawned many a renowned thespian over the years – be sure to pop along and spot new theatre talent in the making. Book at Bats.
The Wellingtonista, it may be revealed, harbours at least two fans of Joss Whedon, creative motivation behind such televisual works of staggering genius as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and, er, Roseanne.
So we are pleased to relay Michael’s announcement of a Wellington charity showing of Whedon’s film Serenity on Friday the 23rd at 7pm at Reading.
Many, this writer included, missed this fine film owing to its absurdly truncated run in local theatres last year. Now is your chance to see it in its natural environment while at the same time supporting Whedon’s favourite charity.

Well, the flyer tells the story, really – if you want to participate in some fun electronic music-making, head along to the Wellington Arts Centre this Sunday (June 11).
Brought to you by our favourite Wellingtonian electronic music-making blogger: Frey.
It’s been a bit quiet up here at Wellingtonista Towers over the last few days, mostly because our two most recent and prolific contributors – Haydn and Tom – have been working flat out on their entry for this year’s 48 Hour Film Challenge.
Their hard work has has resulted in ‘Coupled’ – co-written by Hadyn and starring Tom, and which will screen at 5.45pm tonight (Tusday 30 May) at the Regent Cinema.
No doubt the claims of ‘cinematic brilliance’ are well founded, so get along to enjoy this, and the other quality and not-so-quality pieces of film-making whipped up in your fair city over the weekend.
For a full list of screening times head over to the official 48 Hours website.
(And for more Wellington-based 48 hours blogging action, check out Talula and Che Tibby (the latter being another member of the Coupled team.))
