Clam, crab, cockle, cowrieClam, crab, cockle, cowrie….

The folks from Intersect have created a snappy little poster for their upcoming event at the The Southern Cross tomorrow night.  While I am not sure that even Joanna Newsom and her harp could weave whimsy with CO2 themed alliteration, I am pretty sure that Joni Mitchell has worked a few of these into a song  at some point.

What do cars, cows, cement and conifers have in common?

Why, emissions trading of course.

If you want some educating on the ins and outs of carbon trading, Leah Murphy (from the Ministry of Transport) and Amy Kearse (from the Ministry for the Environment) will be talking us through the economics and the opportunities.

Where: The Artist’s Room, Southern Cross on Able Smith Street

When: Tuesday 4 November, 6:00pm start

This event finishes before quiz at 8:00pm and the Wellingtonista are back on top again at quiz, so come on down and try to knock us off our perch.

I dare ya.

WOW – Fab or Fug?

WOW season is over for another year (for the 20th year in fact) with the last sold-out show last night. So now it comes time, dear readers, for the cold hard assessment. Our streets have been festooned with banners, the sponsors have been flinging free bubbles about eager for a photo op, merchandise has mushroomed and various shop fronts have been requisitioned for the cause.

So whadda ya think? “World-class”? Fab? Fug? Meh? Find out after the break.

Montana World of Wearable Art: Get your barbed-wire frock on!

This week should see an influx of visitors in town to WOW and be WOWed at the Montana Wearable Arts Awards being held at TSB Arena from the 22nd of September until the 5th of October.

The show was Nelson’s baby for 16 years but shifted to Wellington in 2005 because, according to WOW founder Suzie Moncrieff, “We knew we needed to be in a city with more production opportunities, audiences, corporate partners and an international airport.”

Spring Cleaning

Treasure hunt, Lyall Bay beach, Wellington.1975.

What:Envirotainment

Where:Oriental Parade (Freyberg Pool/Mural end)

When: 2.30 till 4.00pm Facebook event page

Spring has well and truly sprung but the universe is sending mixed messages as usual. Lambton Quay is decorated with slightly over-ripe kowhai trees in full bloom; the petals trampled into the street by the suits, and what’s left on the trees disheveled by the spring rains. Confusion reigns, walking down the street one day sans woolly hat, thinking to oneself, "there is nothing like Wellington on a good day" while looking up at the unimpeded blue sky. The next day remembering you still haven’t kicked that damn cold, the election date means tis the season for political hoardings to be littering the streets has begun and you really shouldn’t be wearing open toed shoes yet because it is raining again. Sigh.

Electro Oh How We Love You

Some of us have missed out on Peaches tickets AND found ourselves too skint for Bill Bailey at the St James tonight.

Le Sigh.

Le Big Sigh.

Fortunately solace can be found at Mighty Mighty tonight in the arms of some sweet, sweet electro. NZ based producers, DJs and live performance will be on hand to pound away that pain. The main act is billed as CureMotel but in this girl’s completely biased opinion Stress Cadet alone will be worth the five bucks on the door. Having seen their work as part of Auckland based bands Soft Shoe and the legendary Meatbix (taking a break, maybe they are all shagged out?), Josh Lynne and Damian Golfinopoulos are sure gonna bring the puntastic with plenty of visual and aural frights and delights.

Short Circuit: CureMotel and Stress Cadet
Venue: Mighty Mighty
Doors open: 9:30pm
Cost: $5

Another tasty tit bit

Enjoy Gallery is hosting the penultimate event in their performance workshopping series tonight. Of course, dear reader, it would be outrageous to suggest that you have no other social engagements lined up for the Saturday of a long weekend, but if you can forgive me once again for the short notice, may I suggest that you nip up to the Enjoy gallery on Cuba St (upstairs near Scopa). Come along in the spirit of being a participator not an observer and I guarantee you will not be sorry.

The action will kick off at 6.00pm and bucking the established gallery tradition this event will be BYO.

Chris Brady will be attempting to bring his “Rôti Sans Pareil – Roast without Equal” project to a delicious conclusion. I hear rumors that up to eight birds, layer upon layer, will be involved. The surprise twist being that the eatable end result of all this performance art will be up for grabs tomorrow at an as yet undisclosed location. So you gotta show the commitment by turning up tonight if you want to get yourself a tasty tit bit tomorrow.

Enjoy yourself while you’re still in the pink

Well, I know that in the “The Rules” it is commanded that you should never accept a Saturday date after Wednesday, but if you find yourself at an early Saturday evening loose end and you are near the Cuba quarter, may I suggest heading up to Enjoy gallery from 6:00pm onwards. Enjoy is currently holding a workshopping performance series and a little bird told me that there will be delicious tit bits for those willing to participate in some performance art.

The facebook event description sets the scene thusly:

“Anyone who has ever experienced a live piece of performance art is likely to have experienced confused expectations, a sense of embarrassment for the artist and or a desire for something successful to happen. Enjoy’s 2008 performance series addresses these issues for both audience and artist.”

More after the jump…

(Last Minute) Ode to Love

Yes, it’s Valentine’s Day again. There may be some of you out there in need of last minute inspiration to “score brownie points”. Don’t you hate those bill boards trying to get men to buy flowers around town? They are almost as limited in their conception of masculinity as this little beauty

Those of us holed up in the Molesworth precinct earnestly “leveraging” this, getting “traction on” that and generally “actioning” the hell out stuff all day long, hardly need Valentine’s Day as an excuse to have a wee -tipple. Fortunately Cellar-vate on Molesworth are having free wine tasting from 4:30 till 6:30 this afternoon, and they are promising bubbly no less! So grab your office-bound honey and head on down.

I am going to avoid any cliched suggestions involving flowers or chocolate but spare a thought for all the Japanese office ladies who suffer through the Japanese version of Valentine’s Day where the onus falls on the woman to buy men chocolate and flowers. One month later, on White Day the men reciprocate three-fold, read into that what you will.

The top tip for Valentines Day, in this office lady’s opinion, is the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. They are having an adults-only night at the Sanctuary (oh la la) tonight with free boat rides on the lake, birdsong at dusk and most importantly, no children. They are open until 8.00pm so get a babysitter and get back to nature.
(Ed note: we take no responsibility for anyone caught getting really “back to nature”)

2AWA: Hottest Hospo of the Year

We had a rather heated debate over the Wellingtonista email list over the inclusion of this category in the awards, with one person thinking it was derogatory and insulting. That person got told quite sternly to “READ THE WIKI ALREADY!” so they could discover that the hospitality people we were paying tribute to weren’t being objectified merely for their looks, but also for the quality of service that they provide and the way that they contribute to the overall experience of a place. And that’s not objectifying at all, honest…

Can I have a pint…and your phone number, thanks:
Hotties (or rather: ‘talented good people’) are after the jump…

Pao Pao Pao

This evening the town hall will play host to three hours of indigenous noise making as Pao Pao Pao takes centre stage. This lucky Wellingtonista is on a mission; I have gained access as an embedded civilian photographer to report on the proceedings and soak up the atmosphere. My compatriot will be reporting for Taiohi. She is tasked with extracting some sound bites from the rangatahi and I will be running around with a camera in place of the delicious Mys-T.

Wellington is a small place, as I have been discovering since I moved here. Unless you are a complete hermit you will find yourself being inexorably drawn into various networks and their attendant sticky webs of gossip. Of course this is the same where ever you go, I think anyone who has felt slighty queasy looking at those Facebook friend wheels will know what I am talking about. On the other hand, sometimes the people you meet make you feel like the universe is conspiring in your favour. I am happy to be a drone for the hive mind here at Wellingtonista and will do my best to bring the honey, so in that spirit here is a link to my girl Shaarne clad in Blackberi. Some of our readers may remember a shop called Stand Up Apparel on Plimmer Steps that was featured on Wellingtonista way back when. Blackberi is still alive and kicking via Trademe and Bebo, so check it out if you like what you see.

Shaarne and I will be joining the hordes at the Wellington Town Hall from 7pm. The cost is $30 which is very reasonable for such a wide range of performers. I am looking forward to my first taste of the ancient art of taonga puoro and a chance to check out 4 Corners. Come along and get down with the tangata whenua.
